Random 10 for December 11, 2008

1. The Flaming Lips, “Christmas at the Zoo.” Yes, Podsie is loaded for holiday goodness now. Wayne, all I want for Christmas is a Hari-Krishna Stomp Wagon.

2. Ben Folds, “The Frown Song.”

3. Os Mutantes, “Bat Macumba.”

4. Fannypack, “Seven One Eight.”

5. Ice Cube, “Steady Mobbin’.”

6. Ra Ra Riot, “Dying is Fine.” An orch-rock band reminiscent of Arcade Fire but not necessarily reaching their level. I do like the leafy couture, though, especially on the string section. Yes, it’s Take Your Plant to Work Day.

7. Nina Simone, “I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl.”

8. Tom Jones and Barenaked Ladies, “Little Green Bag.”

9. Lupe Fiasco, “Paris, Tokyo.”

10. The Ruby Suns, “Tane Mahuta.” On a cold damn day like today in this hemisphere, it must be balmy in Auckland. Drift away, lads and lassies, on the transporting tropical sounds of the fabulous Ruby Suns, making beautiful music that’s great as a soundtrack for declaring mutiny against your captain, going native and producing a society of half-Tahitians, most of whom are named Christian or Fletcher.
