Random 10 for Oct. 6, 2008
1. T-Bone Walker, “T-Bone Boogie”
2. Green Day, “Uptight”
3. James Brown, “The Payback”
Tell me that James Brown — as spotlighted in this performance from the late, great Midnight Special – can’t get you up and moving, even on a Monday. Ha!
4. Self, “Pattycake”
5. Material Issue, “Kim the Waitress”
These Chicago-based power popsters were among the sharpest, tightest pseudo-glam rock groups of the Nineties, and then in 1997 lead singer Jim Ellison had to go ahead and commit suicide, a tragic end to what likely would have been a glorious career. This ’94 single from Freak City Soundtrack focuses on a phenomenon I suspect is familiar to more than a few men. At roughly the time this album came out, a friend of mine and I had a ritual of meeting for breakfast every Sunday at a certain Jimmy’s Egg for the sole purpose of mooning over (in the non-backside sense) a certain waitress. Needless to say, she got exorbitant tips and we got fat.
6. Paul Simon, ”Mother and Child Reunion”
7. Lyle Lovett, “Nobody Knows Me”
8. Cat Power, “He War”
The inimitable Chan Marshall, replete with chiming guitar and curiously oblique lyrics.
9. Rancid, “Journey to the End of the East Bay”
10. Santa Esmerelda, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”
– Chase
