Random 10 for Sept. 18, 2008

1. The Decemberists, “Sons & Daughters”

2. The Animals, “It’s My Life”

I was heartbroken to learn that Eric Burdon and the Animals recently cancelled their slated appearance next week at the Oklahoma State Fair — almost as heartbroken as I had been to learn that Eric Burdon and the Animals had been slated to playat the Oklahoma State Fair. Nothing against the Land of fried Twinkies and dunk tanks, but these British Invasion pioneers deserve more hallowed status. Burdon’s growling vocals and bluesy stylings resulted in some timeless classics, including this 1965 anthem for teen independence.

3. son, ambulance, “Brown Park”

4. Eels, “Agony”

5. Elvis Costello & the Attractions, “Battered Old Bird”

6. Goober & the Peas, “Hot Women (Cold Beer)”

Unfairly relegated to the dustbin of early-Nineties alt-rock detritus, Detroit’s Goober & the Peas whipped up two records of ferociously weird and wonderful cowpunk, served up with an irresistible side of raunch. Mmm… delicious

7. George Strait, “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind?”

8. Camper Van Beethoven, “Cattle (Reversed)”

9. The Bottle Rockets, “I’ll Be Coming Around”

Straight-forward roots rock about the willingness to be the “other guy.” This 1994 song from Festus, MO’s Bottle Rockets was introduced to me by an old friend of mine who at the time was “involved,” as they say, with a married woman. As a result, the tune always sounds just a tiny bit sleazy to me.

10. Dolly Parton featuring Alison Krauss, Mindy Smith & Dan Tyminski, “The Cruel War”
