Random 10 for Sept. 4, 2008

1. Lovage, “Stroker Ace.” This was a project from a few years ago by Dan “The Automator” Nakamura of Handsome Boy Modeling School Fame, Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields and my wife’s favorite performer of all time, Mike Patton. Yeah, right — she has nightmares about him in which he sprouts full body hair and crashes through our bedroom window. Fortunately for Laura, he’s not present in this video. Fortunately for the rest of us, Jennifer Charles is.

2. The Sleepy Jackson, “Sunkids.”

3. David Bowie, “Panic in Detroit.”

4. Gnarls Barkley, “A Little Better.”

5. The Frames, “Falling Slowly.”

6. Colourmusic, “Yes!” A magnificently energetic video showcasing Oklahoma in all its shades, and at 2:12, Scott Booker makes a special appearance. Scott, you’re a national treasure, and with your guidance, Colourmusic soon will be, as well.

7. Patton Oswalt, “The Winning Team.”

8. Ween, “I’ll Be Your Johnny On the Spot.”

9. Jay-Z feat. Nas, “Success.”

10. Steely Dan, “Haitian Divorce.” In 1986, I spent much of the summer staying with some friends in a 500-year-old Japanese house near the beach in Hayama, Japan. It’s not a country known for its surf, but Hayama is the surf capitol of Nippon and the site of the Emperor’s summer place. It was an amazing place to be when I was 19 had enormous swaths of free time on my hands, and there were vending machines all over the beach roads selling those 4-liter Kirin kegs with the whistling dragon spouts.

A friend of mine named Scott Guido had a cassette of Steely Dan’s Greatest Hits, and I just remember that summer being a blur of Kirin, “Here at the Western World,” “Doctor Wu” and “Haitian Divorce.” What a stunning place, and perfect music when your day is all beach, beer and udon noodles.
