Random 10 for August 4, 2008

1. The Shins, “Australia.” This has precious little to do with our southerly friends with reverse-swirling toilets, and everything to do with stealing balloons from car dealerships. Glorious, glorious balloons.

2. Beth Orton, “Conceived.”

3. Gnarls Barkley, “No Time Soon.”

4. Eric Matthews, “Flight and Lion.”

5. The New Pornographers, “Use It.”

6. Ween, “Roses Are Free.” This is not an official video, but it looks like something that could have sprung from Deaner and Gener’s Scotchgarded imaginations. Great for fan work.

7. The Flaming Lips, “Race For the Prize.”

8. Yes, “Your Move (I’ve Seen All Good People).”

9. Photocall, “Silver Clouds.”

10. Cut Copy, “Lights and Music.” Cut Copy’s aesthetic is essentially Daft Punky robo-rock with an infusion of humanity. Ultradisco created by guys who look like they’d rather be in Jack Johnson’s band, but that’s oddly refreshing in itself.

Future Bible Heroes, and in particular “Lonely Days,” always felt to me like a Thompson Twins knockoff — it sounds like a track that John Hughes would have used during a bittersweet moment.
