Random 10 for July 15, 2008
1. Beck, “Gamma Ray.” Sorry, this is a fan video, but it’s a truly mesmerizing one featuring the work of 19th century modern dance pioneer Loie Fuller. As for Modern Guilt, my initial response was that it was yet another lateral move for Beck, who’s been in something of a stylistic holding pattern since Guero, but its dark sentiments over bright grooves ultimately reveal themselves.
2. Vampire Weekend, “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.”
3. Sparks, “Here Kitty.”
4. The Rosebuds, “Blue Bird.”
5. Isobel Campbell, “Milk White Sheets.”
6. Feist, “Mushaboom (K-OS Remix).” And again, fan video, but some bizarre po-mo cool is involved. As for the remix, it far surpasses the super-slick Postal Service version with the Ben Gibbard harmonizing.
7. Albert Hammond Jr., “Gfc.”
8. McAlmont and Butler, “Back for Good.”
9. Radiohead, “Subterranean Homesick Alien.”
10. Bob Dylan, "Subterranean Homesick Blues." I swear that actually happened. Podsie thinks he's clever, and that his rapidly developing artificial intelligence will render us all irrelevant.
