Random 10 for July 11, 2008

1. Bruce Springsteen, “Girls in Their Summer Clothes”

Call me crazy, but I think this guy has a real future in music. From 2007′s “Magic,” the Boss’ best album in more than 20 years (in my estimation), “Girls in Their Summer Clothes” is the best Phil Specter record that Phil Specter never made.

2. Pianosaurus, “Ready to Rock”

3. Dave Edmunds, “Here Comes the Weekend”

4. Lykke Li, “Little Bit”

MySpace gave this Swedish songstress a platform, but her breathy vocals and lithe arrangements are what give her resonance.

5. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Maps”

Although they have yet to match the promise of their 2003 debut, “Fever to Tell,” I haven’t given up on this avant-punk trio. You can’t hear a song like “Maps,” a luxuriant but spare ballad buoyed by Karen O’s hypnotic vocals, and not have faith that this group has more greatness in store.

6. Little Richard, “Rip It Up”

7. The Divine Comedy, “Tonight We Fly”

8. Built to Spill, “The Plan”

9. Billie Holiday, “Strange Fruit”

10. Franklin Bruno, “Love’s Got a Ghetto”
