We’ve lost some really gifted filmmakers over the past year. I really liked most of Pollack’s work. Even his more mundane works scored points for being well-crafted and — surprising in Hollywood these days — grown-up. I think “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” is still one of the more brutally sad movies I’ve ever seen, and while it’s no fun to sing the praises of “Tootsie,” it’s tough to argue that film is not a brilliant farce.

And you’re right that he was also a pretty damned fine actor. He will be missed.
