Random 10 for May 12, 2008

1. St. Vincent, “Jesus Saves, I Spend.” Tulsa-born Annie Clark was really too formidable to be just one of 22 people on stage with The Polyphonic Spree. Marry Me continues to hold up well, and this clip, part of 2007′s Music Video Trend of the Year (theatrical productions), is a nice reflection of her talent and quirks. I seriously want to earn the “Mind Sandwich” badge — watch the video, and that statement doesn’t sound nearly so deranged.

2. Charles Mingus, “Original Faubus Fables.”

3. Gomez, “How We Operate.”

4. Dave “Gruber” Allen, “I’m Eighteen.”

5. Eisley, “I Could Be There For You.”

6. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, “Most High.” If John Paul Jones had been invited to the party for 1998′s Walking Into Clarksdale, the thing would have sold like Diet Coke. Instead, Clarksdale barely went Platinum. While it is a far-from-perfect disc, “Most High” and “Shining in the Light” are good enough for the Zeppelin canon. But seriously, this reunion deserved better than the dime-store surrealism of this video.

7. Elvis Perkins, “Without Love.”

8. Tilly and the Wall, “Nights of the Living Dead.”

9. The Fratellis, “Baby Fratelli.”

10. Great Northern, “Home.” Considerable melodic gifts, this band has. Before this L.A. group, Solon Bixler was in 30 Seconds to Mars and Earlimart, but the big Soft Bulletin-style grandeur of Great Northern bears scant resemblance to either of those groups.
