Cook Survives Diamond’s “Hot April Night”
Brooke White: She Is … She’s Sad
David Cook might be cruising to an all-”David” showdown with David Archuleta, thanks to a string of great “American Idol” nights. The Tulsa singer-songwriter survived another round of “American Idol” on Wednesday after strong performances of “I’m Alive” and “All I Really Need is You” during Neil Diamond week.
But as last week’s dismissal of Carly Smithson proved, being a judges’ favorite does not always count on “Idol,” and a weak night is not the kiss of death. Jason Castro, who was panned by the judging panel for Tuesday’s renditions of “September Morn” and “Forever in Blue Jeans,” survived.
On Tuesday, judge Paula Abdul told Cook, “I feel like I’m already looking at the ‘American Idol.’” When host Ryan Seacrest asked his reaction, Cook expressed concern.
“Honestly, the first thing I thought about was what Simon said to Carly last week, about it being the kiss of death,” Cook said. “But, you know, I hope you’re right.”
Brooke White and Syesha Mercado, who narrowly missed going home last week, occupied the bottom two rungs this week, and in the final analysis, White went home.
“I just want to say thank you,” White said through tears before performing Diamond’s “I Am… I Said.” “It’s going to be terrible for me right now, but thank you.”
What’s terrible for us right now is the memory of that horrible new Neil Diamond song. “Pretty Amazing Grace”? Pretty amazing that Rick Rubin let him get away with that.
