Random 10 for April 19, 2008
1. She and Him, “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward’s new disc projects a seemingly authentic 60s pop beauty with slight country undertones that makes it immediately contagious. Don’t worry about this being an actress’ side project — Deschanel has long ago proved she has the pipes to do this right. Fair warning: the video is a slice of cheese — a fan-produced clip from Fox’s “Bones,” which stars her sister, Emily.
2. Lady Sovereign, “Blah Blah.”
3. Vashti Bunyan, “Somethings Just Stick In Your Mind.”
4. Matthew Alvin Brown, “Rainbow Around the Sun.” From the Team Awesome production. Go for the movie, stick around for the superb music.
5. TV On the Radio, Blues from Down Here.”
6. The Essex Green, “By the Sea.”
7. Wilco, “What Light.”
8. Kool Keith, “Get Off My Elevator.”
9. Tilly and the Wall, “Nights of the Living Dead.”
10. Chris Walla, “Sing Again.” When does a solo album not sound like a solo album? Is Walla doing some kind of ventriloquism routine with Ben Gibbard?
