CBS sportscasters bash Big 12
A few years back when he worked for ABC, Gary Danielson covered the Big 12 Conference and enthusiastically talked up teams in the conference. Now, in his third season with CBS, he has become a Big 12 basher. He and play-by-play partner, Verne Lundquist, took several shots at the league in a conference call Tuesday afternoon to promote CBS’ telecast of the Southeastern Conference championship: No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 2 Florida at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Danielson said the Big 12 statistics are overrated because of a lack of defense in the conference.
Danielson: “I’ve got to say the stats in the Big 12 are like pesos to me, they’re just not worth much. Everybody has stats there. It’s 300 pecos for a half gallon of milk.”
Lundquist: “I understand the point. I watched the game with half of
Danielson rated the SEC ahead of the Big 12 because it has better defensive players.
Danielson: “They have better defensive lineman, more NFL linebackers. Go check out the draft the last 15 years and find out where the NFL players (came from). The NFL doesn’t draft guys that have nice uniforms or come from a conference that is highly rated in the BCS. They go and look at these players that they think are good athletes to play in the NFL. There are more NFL-ready bodies in this league than any other league at this frame of time. Right now, there is a deficiency of quarterbacks in this league.”
Danielson said he would like to see
Danielson: “In a perfect world if G.D. was in charge of things, they should have asked Missouri to step aside. This clearly is a once in a lifetime thing with them being ranked 2 and 3, 2 and 4 or 3 and 4, or whatever, everybody knows that one of these teams should be playing in the (BCS) championship and I wish like the commissioner in baseball, the commissioner of the Big 12 should have said for the good of the conference, let’s let them replay this thing in the Big 12 championship.”
Both Danielson and Lundquist played up
Danielson: “I don’t think he’s going to win it unless he has a marquis performance Saturday against Alabama. He is going to have put on a show.”

Maybe one of you can explain to me why you think Tebow is in the Heisman hunt. His stats are not even close to the QB’s in the Big 12. And don’t give us the stuff about no defense either. You guys are looking for any excuse to give it to Tebow when others are much more deserving.
i thought danielson was football savy but i have changed my mind.who is playing the best football in the country right now?if texas played okla. 10 timews right now they might win 3 of the 10.hey i am a flordia fan but i am not stupid enough to know that okla. is far the best team in the country and i belive they will show that in their last 2 games.wake up and smell the roses CBS commentators.
Does that really surprise anybody! CBS has always been that way! Does Gary think that the Big 12 teams have suddenly forgot how to play defence? I guess the nation will know when the N/C is played! BOOMER SOONER!!
Of course…Florida scores 52 on LSU, 63 on Kentucky, Half a hundred AT Georgia and 56 against S. Carolina
Great defenses in the SEC…All two of them
I guess Danielson was too busy to notice Texas sacked Arkansas 7 times and held them to their lowest output of the season, 160 yards.
No way a team from the Big 12 could do that.
Everyone is bashing the Sooners and jumping on the Texas bandwagon with things like “Settle it on the field? Not in this league.” I think Tech Settled it on the field against Texas and OU settled it on the field against that same team? Those games were head to head. Where’s the love for Tech, Texas whiners?
Hey Gary…what about the 35-10 beating we gave the number 2 rated defense in TCU. Sounds like alot of sour grapes from Gary here. After all we all know ESPN is the leader in sports television.
Which Gary is not apart of any more.
I hope these gentlemen won’t mind if I recommend that readers look at the schedules and scores that are public record for Alabama and Florida. They might notice that the SEC opponents of these teams, with only notable exceptions, provided little defense against either team. Hardly justifies exaltation of the SEC as a “defensively” superior LEAGUE, and the offensive output of the opponents was pretty squeamish as well, but, of course, we see what we want to see or are paid to see, whatever.
It would not matter who these Big 12 teams play they would put up big numbers against anyone. With spread offenses dotting the landscape these days most everywhere but the SEC is the reason the SEC’s defenses lok superior to Big 12,they are not.
If SEC teams were facing these teams like are in Big 12 they would know of what they speak.
There is far too much worship of the SEC Conference. OU would be a leader in that conference also. nuff said!
I wish them two idiots that done the last two OU games worked for CBS and then CBS would have four losers.
funny remark about the DL’s and LB’s. During the the MN/CHI game last weekend, Peterson was running against who else? Tommie Harris and Dusty Dvorcek. Also, MN had Kevin Williams on their DL from OK State. The other half of the crushing Williams duo with Pat Williams who played for who? Texas A&M. Well, I guess they did just get suspended but still.
Not to say the SEC doesn’t put out some impressive Defensive players, but don’t act like other conferences dont.
Just a thought…
We need to understand the myopic context of Danielson’s comments. He’s a Big 10 man, graduate, former player (Purdue). His son attended Northwestern and played QB. He played for the Detroit Lions (Big 10 country). He’s big pals with Brent Musberger (also a Northwestern graduate) who puts on a big show when he’s broadcasting the Big 12 games, but is a staunch Big 10er. Danielson conveniently forgets the 38-7 bashing Missouri (arguably the 4th or 5th team in the Big 12 this year) put on Arkansas in the 2008 Cotton Bowl—when Arkansas had the two glamour backs—. And he thinks the Georgia QB Stafford is the quintessential Pro QB because he doesn’t “dink and dunk” as Big 12 QBs do. I don’t think averaging 8-10 yards a pass is a dink or dunk. Were Montana and Young dinkers and dunkers? Let’s see what happens after this year’s series of bowl games. I’m sure organizers are trying to arrange BIG 12 vs. SEC match-up games. I’ll take Oklahoma, Texas, OSU, Texas Tech, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas in these contests. The Big 12 could go 7-0 in bowl wins.
Danielson payed for the Detroit Lions. Now that is an offensive juggernaut alright. So far I have not found and objective analyst or reporter nor any announcer in the media on this subject. Appears to be just like the last presidential campaign. Bias for the whiners.
Mel,
Do you know Danielson’s or Lundquist’s e-mail addresses? Love to write these guys directly. Thanks
Texas, who played all those high scoring juggernauts of the Big 12 (and of course they were one of them) still ranked 21st in the nation against scoring, and 3rd against the run. And even with all those pass-happy teams (the nation’s top four passing attacks), the Big 12′s pass-defense stats were not much worse than the SEC’s. This idea that the SEC is “tougher” than the Big 12 is nonsense. I agree with JForce’s prediction of a 7-0 shutout in bowl games for Big 12 teams.
Fla is the only team that can hang with the Big 12 South & Mizzou.
Are the defenses that good in the SEC or is it the offenses are just that bad. Fla doesn’t seem to have a trouble scoring, but the have an offense. The last time I checked you don’t get points for sending players to the NFL. They don’t need to comment on teams the don’t watch often. I wonder what they would say if they called Big XII games – These teams have the best offenses in the country. When you get down to it I would put UT’ & OU against any team in the country.

I think CBS guys have been brainwashed by the SEC. The reason it seems they have good defense is because the offenses couldn’t score 40 points if the other team didn’t even show up.
Alabama is thinking they could stop the Dallas Cowboys because they held Auburn to Zero points. But if you saw the game you know Auburn really couldn’t score if Alabama wasn’t on the field, with all the penalties, drops, fumbles, missed blocks, etc.,etc. Same for FSU… If they played Auburn, the score would have been zero to zero and they both would have thought they were proverbial SEC defensive powerhouses.
What a joke!
