Mel Kiper doesn’t advise trading up for running back
Although NFL draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. loves Arkansas tailback Darren McFadden, he doesn’t advise the Dallas Cowboys or any other team to trade up to get a running back in April’s draft. “I like his skill level, his talent, how he did against the elite teams,” Kiper said of McFadden during an ESPN teleconference this week.
“I would not move up to get a running back unless it was a case where you saw a guy drop significantly. Adrian Peterson was either the first, second or third guy on everybody’s board and he dropped down to seven. He dropped down to five and nobody did anything. He dropped down to six and nobody traded up to get him. He fell right to Minnesota, who had a debate. When you see a Peterson drop to seven to trade up for a running back … you can find a running back in the fourth round as good as in the first.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, an Arkansas alumnus, has indicated he is interested in trying to obtain McFadden, and might try to put together a package, possibly including running back Marion Barber, to trade for Miami’s No. 1 overall selection.

Chris Paul named Midseason MVP by Charles Barkley
Chris Paul’s remarkable season in leading the New Orleans Hornets back to the top of the NBA Western Conference hasn’t gone unnoticed. TNT analyst Charles Barkley has picked Paul, who is averaging 20.3 points and 10.8 assists, as his Mid-Season MVP. Los Angeles Lakers forward Kobe Bryant received the most votes, three, being picked by Kenny Smith, Ernie Johnson and Reggie Miller.
Hornets coach Byron Scott and forward David West also were recognized by TNT’s panel of six analysts. Scott, who has directed the Hornets to a 32-15 record — which ties Dallas as second-best in the Western Conference — was named Coach of the Year by Barkley, Johnson and Miller. West, who is averaging 19.3 points and 9.1 assists, was named most improved player by Barkley and Mike Fratello.
Seattle SuperSonics forward Kevin Durant was named Rookie of the Year by four analysts, although Barkley abstained from voting. Durant is averaging 19.6 points and 4.2 rebounds for the lowly Sonics (12-36).
TNT will be in New Orleans next week to cover all the NBA All-Star Game festivities.
