In all seriousness, “socialist” is probably not the best word to throw out into the open. Why? Simply because many people start flailing their arms about without realizing that certain socialist ideas actually work in America. Do you want Social Security? Well, that’s a socialist program; it is organized and regulated by the government. It was also born out of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal program. Socialism can also be seen all over the United States; just consider VA hospitals, schools, the post office, libraries, interstates, Medicare, jails, the U.S. military, beaches, and parks. All of these things are government controlled.Just something to think about before we start getting the wrong idea about what socialism means for America.Ashley Foster is a sophomore from Edmond who loves to argue, write and photograph.
