Sabi Singh, a member of the metro area Sikh faith community, is proud of the interfaith connections that he and other local members of his faith have nourished here in Oklahoma.

Sabi Singh, a member of the metro area Sikh faith community, is proud of the interfaith connections that he and other local members of his faith have nourished here in Oklahoma.

In a recent story, I shared information about the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Sikh Gurdwara of Oklahoma building. The new house of worship is being constructed near the Sikh community current gurdwara at 4525 NW 16.

Sabi Singh said he wanted to make sure readers knew that the groundbreaking ceremony included people of several different faiths. He said this was an important aspect of the ceremony.

Since I did not share that information in my April 15 story, I asked Sabi Singh to send me some pictures and a few more details about the event and I would pass this along to my readers.

Sabi Singh said people who participated in the groundbreaking ceremony and the faiths they represented included the Rev. Jim Shields, Christianity; Neeraj Khanna, Hinduism; Asim Chohan, Islam; Carl Rubenstein, Judaism; and Puneet Singh, Sikhism.

(CUTLINE/Photo provided by Chittranjan Verma: the Rev. Jim Shields reads a Christian blessing while members of the Sikh Gurdwara congregation bow their heads in prayer.)

My thanks to Sabi Singh for highlighting this interfaith event.

The Oklahoman and NewsOK.com are partnering with Louisa McCune-Elmore (pictured), editor-in-chief of Oklahoma Today magazine, to feature several of her blog postings during her visit to Istanbul, Turkey through March 28.

McCune-Elmore is traveling with several Oklahomans as a guest of the Institute of Interfaith Dialog, hosted by Orhan Kucukosman.

Today, she writes about traveling abroad and learning that a fellow journalist, Oklahoma native Anthony Shadid of the New York Times, had been detained by Libyan forces. McCune-Elmore said Oklahoma Today did a feature article on Shadid about five years ago and she has admired the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist’s work and courage for some time:

“With my fellow travelers, publishers and journalists among them, I visit Sophia Haggia, the Blue Mosque, the sultans’ palace. I have beautiful dinners and wonderful tea and join in a chic Turkish birthday party, where I bum a cigarette, drink champagne, and dance with Turkish lovelies. I lounge on pure silk Turkish rugs. But where is Anthony, Saint Anthony, my missing patron saint of Middle Eastern travels? Throughout the night, my hotel room TV turned on, I listen in a foreign language to news reports of the bombing runs on Libya. Where is he? Where is he?”

Turkey, McCune-Elmore goes on to write, played a pivotal role in the eventual release of Shadid and the other Times journalists detained in Libya.

Here’s something to think about: Clinton, daughter of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, is a Christian, while her fiance Marc Mezvinsky is Jewish.

The Washington Post’s religion blog On Faith recently included postings on the issue of interfaith marriage. The blog’s diverse group of panelists answered the question “Should religions intermarry?”

An Army chaplain is being criticized for calling a day of prayer and fasting today, the first day of Passover.

An Army chaplain is being criticized for calling a day of prayer and fasting today, the first day of Passover.

The Religion News Service reports that Maj. Gen. Douglas Carver, a Southern Baptist and Army Chief of Chaplains, issued his call for prayer and fasting in response to the rising suicide rates among soldiers.

Last year, the RNS reported, the Army reported the highest suicide rate since record-keeping began in 1980.

“I therefore call the Chaplaincy to a Day of Prayer and Fasting, in keeping with your religious traditions, to be observed on 8 April 2009 that the united cry of our Corps will be heard and answered regarding the protection, preservation, and peace for our Soldiers and Families,” Carver said in his proclamation, which was issued March 2.

The RNS reported that Carver told Baptist Press, the Southern Baptist Convention’s official news agency, that “April 8 is a Wednesday and prayer meeting night for Southern Baptists, so we really encourage not only Baptists but all local churches to pray for the military.”

The Religion News Service pointed out that Carver, as chief of chaplains, has oversight of Army chaplains of all faiths, including Jewish rabbis.

The news service said dozens of Jewish soldiers and chaplains have filed complaints with the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, a watchdog group that advocates religious neutrality in the military. Mikey Weinstein, president of the group, told the RNS that there has been a “tsunami” of complaints against the Day of Prayer, and believes the conflict with Passover is inexcusable.

“The fact that this would fall on this same day is not just wrong or bad, but unforgivable, and Carver should be severely disciplined,” Weinstein said.

Weinstein’s group is currently suing the Department of Defense for a “pernicious and pervasive pattern and practice of unconstitutional rape of the precious religious freedoms” of those in the military, and the group believes the Day of Prayer is just the latest example, the RNS reported.

The Jewish holiday of Passover begins at sundown. It commemorates the Israelites exodus from Egypt. A seder, a ceremonial meal traditionally held during Passover, is typically held on the first and second nights of the holiday.

Interfaith Worker Justice has created a new Web site called Can My Boss Do That?

Interfaith Worker Justice has created a new Web site called Can My Boss Do That?

The site’s creator said it comes at a time when many Americans are losing their jobs, and some of them doesn’t know where to turn for answers pertaining to their job loss.

The site is designed to help workers understand their rights and protections and become advocates for themselves, Anne Janks, a worker advocate and the Web site’s creator, said in a news release.

The site at www.canmybossdothat.com offers state specific information to help in real life situations.

“The need for clear, usable information for people who are facing unemployment is overwhelming,” Janks said.

“We’re seeing more bosses cutting corners and breaking employment laws. This Web site is one way workers can make sure they understand how best to protect themselves.”

Information is given pertaining to situations such as:

– A teacher trying to find out if her student can collect unemployment after quitting because she was groped by her boss.

– An upscale grocery store closes, with no notice. Workers are told to take their final pay in food and wine.

– A worker doesn’t file for unemployment after his boss tells him that he isn’t eligible because he’s a part-time worker. He regularly worked 35 hours a week and was eligible.
