Best-selling “Left Behind” 16-book fiction series (1995-2007, Tynedale House) is based on literal interpretation

This week we’ve all been treated to Sen. John McCain’s political ad likening his opponent in the race for the U.S. presidency to over-the-top celebrities like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. And we’ve also seen Hilton’s response.

Another recent McCain political ad dubbed “The One” is causing furor because some political commentators have suggested that it likens Obama to the *antichrist, particularly to the antichrist character (Nicolae Carpathia)  depicted in the best-selling “Left Behind” bible prophecy series.

Well, according to a story released today by Christian Newswire, the series’ authors, Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye, don’t take McCain’s commercial or the antichrist speculation over Obama too seriously.

LaHaye and Jenkins take a literal interpretation of prophecies found in the Book of Revelation. They believe the antichrist will surface on the world stage at some point, but neither see Obama in that role.

“I’ve gotten a lot of questions the last few weeks asking if Obama is the antichrist,” Jenkins said in the Christian Newswire release. “I tell everyone that I don’t think the antichrist will come out of politics, especially American politics.”

LaHaye said: “I can see by the language he uses why people think he could be the antichrist, but from my reading of scripture, he doesn’t meet the criteria. There is no indication in the Bible that the antichrist will be an American.”

In “Left Behind,” Carpathia is a young Romanian politician who eventually oversees a one-world government, and as the series unfolds, is revealed as the antichrist.

Incidentally, I read the series and I know a lot of others have too. That’s why I thought this might be of interest.

*For those who are unfamiliar with the term antichrist, Merriam-Webster Dictionary gives this definition: 1: one who denies or opposes Christ; specifically : a great antagonist expected to fill the world with wickedness but to be conquered forever by Christ at his second coming2: a false Christ.)
