“Eat, Pray, Love” star Julia Roberts discovers Hinduism

Julia Roberts, the star of  the new feature film “Eat, Pray, Love” has declared that she is a practicing Hindu.

The movie star made the announcement in the September edition of Elle magazine. Apparently several news outlets in India have already been reporting this since the star discovered her affinity for Hinduism while filming “Eat, Pray, Love,” which premieres today in theaters.

The New York Daily News reported that Roberts was raised as a Christian (Baptist father, Catholic mother).

Her announcement is the subject of several blog postings and news articles.

Here’s a sampling of some of them:

USA Today’s Faith and Reason blog: “Julia Roberts Hindu? Who Knew?!”

New York Daily News: “Julia Roberts Now a Practicing Hindu”

The Washington Post’s On Faith religion blog: “Julia Roberts is Hindu, just like so much in America.”

GetReligion.org: “Julia Roberts’ Hindu practice”

I will pray for her to see the light and return to Christianity before it is to late.

So sad that Christians who are not strong can be swayed to a cult so easily

wow, js. honestly, ur ignorance insults me. a cult? if anything i should be calling ur 2000 year old faith a cult of judaism, but i have more respect for other faiths than that. Hinduism is far greater than a cult, its a religion that has been in existence for more than 4000 years before your faith (assuming you are christian). in regards to julia roberts, whatever floats your boat, its not my business to judge you based on what theological decisions to take. but it makes me mad as a hindu living in america that all evangelical christians or christians in general speaking on this topic are just bashing hinduism, calling us barbaric or a cult as js and other vile crap.

as js says*

but one thing i will say in regards to julia roberts, i dont think that renaming your children was necessary n well… thts just kinda pushing it in my opinion

We Christians serve a RISEN SAVIOR, Jesus Christ, who walked the earth and died for ALL of our sins on the cross at Calvary. We are saddened when someone who has had the opportunity to accept Him rejects His work on the cross and chooses to spit in His face and burn in hell for all eternity. THAT is the ONLY reason we care about her. Her poor kids have no other choice at this point, but I pray they find Christ as they grow to the age of accountability and accept Him as the loving Savior He is. I also pray Julia wakes up before it is too late. This is not hate, it is love. Christ DIED for us all, and the Hindu faith has what? Sacred cows and multiple “gods”? Christ is still hated by people after 2000 years! All HE did was take YOUR sin on the cross. He arose, this was witnessed by hundreds of witnesses, and He lives today. All He wants is you to ASK HIM to be your Lord and Savior, period! No CHANTING necessary. Julia, I am praying for you now.

@Tina: You were completely brainwashed by Evangelists or somebody. Jesus DIDN”T die for our SINS. That’s bull. It is as superstitious (may be in fact more ) as some of the Hindus sacredly respecting Cows. What Jesus, the Man, has taught was to rebel against authority and to respect each other’s neighbor. His teachings were more radical at that point of time and region (Israel). In India, Buddha and Asoka taught and implemented that before Jesus.
The reason why Christ is hated by many is not because of Christ or his teachings. It is because of people like you, who without understanding the basic teachings of Jesus blindly believe that other’s are going to Hell and you force upon your stupidity and beliefs on them. Go ask any Hindu, if they hate Christ. They say No. Now pressurize or brainwash some of them with your stupid beliefs. Other hindus automatically hates you and that hate extrapolates to Christ. So use your brain. Thanks!

Hollywood is the mecca for morons. So whats next? If Julia plays a witch will she become a wiccan? Julia can now join Maddona the Jewish mystical priestess and Tom Cruise, John Travolta et al whose Scientolgy says we are all possessed by the sprits of dead space aliens. They are so rich, so bored and so confused they are ripe to fall into the religion of the month club.

Ohhaha! I love these comments! Js and Tina – if there even is a hell, which I highly doubt, assholes like you two will be the kind of people that end up there!

Closed minded fools, learn to think for yourselves. How about just being a good person in life and making the conscious CHOICE to do right WITHOUT needing the impending doom of ‘hell’ looming over your heads and the wrath of organized religion to force it down your throat. Just listen to yourselves – you just sound like intolerable erratic fools!

But that’s ok, because you can just condemn me to hell now and reinforce your own visions for eternity in the paraletic ecstacy that awaits for you, as you so believe you’ll be spending among the silver lined clouds of ‘heaven’ with your God, that you must spell with a capital G, because it is so fucking important.

Freaks.

I was an orothadox, conservative “Christian” of the Reformed faith for 25 SOLID years. My thirst for spiritual understanding and enlightenment FINALLY drove me to begin doing the “unthinkable”: I began exploring spiritually OUTSIDE of the Holy Bible.
Now, five years later, I am familiar with the true ancient wisom of the East (the beautiful Upanishads; Bhagavad Gita; Yoga Sutras of Patanjalia…as well as the Tao Teh Ching). My conclusion: The words of Christ are FILLED with Yogi wisdom. Christ can be seen in the Tao as well. The core teachings of the Buddha, Krisna and others are all the same. It is the ignorant, superstious or materialist who refuses to see that Christ is speaking of Christ CONSCIOUSNESS.

P.S.

P.S. I LOVE the Hindu people. I LOVE the true Hindu spiritual teaching of the science of the soul. I LOVE India which is the MOTHER of true ancient wisdom and has withstood the test of time for thousands of years because of her faithfulness to SPIRITUAL truth.
It was the Maji or “wise” men of the EAST (Get it? The EAST!) who greeted the Christ upon His birth. It was also the EAST in which the Christ spent his lost years “growing in wisdom” … rest assured. It is also from the EAST in which true spiritual illumination arises: “His coming shall be as the lightening which shines from the EAST even unto the West” (“East” also has spiritual meanings)
In my entire orothodox “Christian” past, I have NEVER met a Christian who truly understands how to attain LIVING the Sermon on the Mount … until I finally met truly spiritual Hindu people (yogis, etc)

Whatever happened to “judge not, lest ye be judged?” I think that is something that everyone can understand and practice, regardless of religious belief.

Wonder why people are wasting time.. fighting and trying to prove themselves.. Let the person decide what he/she wants to be..and what they want to adopt in life.. The bottom line is a peaceful life.. which is unique to everyone…

If some Christian finds his/her life in Hinduism, then I dont see anything wrong in this..and the converse is equally true..

I beleive I am free to follow my heart and so is everyone..

So guys enjoy this wonderful journey called life.. and don’t worry about anyone else even if she is Julia Roberts ^_^

I know the christianity and the hinduism. The christianity is a moral code, is not a religion. In any true religion, you can experience the sacred, the divine science, manages to illuminate your life in your specific case. If a religion is a belief, is ilusion. It´s true because you believe? The gravity´s law is perfect, before and after the discover of Newton.
The christianity is beatiful for values, but is not sufficient.
Probably, the real teachings of Jesus Christ was burned, to evite the bad use of spiritual science, and prefer to create actors, good people by table and not authentic. It is not good, It´s necessary to understand the process of transformation of the soul.

Any thing is real because is “written”? is absurd. It´s real because is real.

The Hinduism is not prepared for the world, and the world is not prepared for the hinduism.

Why the people invent god? i dont know.

The Christianity of first centuries, must be different at actual chrsitianity.

P.S. Dean, your comment is perfect, congratulations

It is so great to hear about Julia Roberts embracing Hinduism. She has chosen wisely and she sets a good example for her fans. I am very proud of her wonderful public declaration.

Carl, I agree with EVERYTHING you’ve stated … especially saying: “Any thing is real because is “written”? is absurd.”

I appreciate the encouraging comments. Thank you.

Thank you very much for your great website
