Are you a fan of rump-shaking videos?
Does that post title pack enough of a provocative punch?
Probably not considering that a lot of rump-shaking is going on these days in music videos and it’s nothing new — we’ve all been there and done that.
Well even if you are not a fan of certain music videos which blare out curse words and demean women, among other things, Michael Leahy says most of us are inundated with thousands of such sexual images and messages — whether we want them or not.
“We’ve lost the freedom of choice to consume porn or not,” he said.
Leahy, a recovering sex addict gave a presentation called “Porn Nation: The Naked Truth” at the University of Central Oklahoma on Monday night. He started out with a video presentation of images that most of us had seen before:
– NBA star Kobe Bryant sitting next to his wife as he confessed to adultery at a news conference;
– Pop icons Brittany Spears and Madonna sharing a lingering kiss at an awards show on prime time television;
– Countless magazine covers featuring half-naked dressed women in provocative poses.
I didn’t realize that I’d become used to seeing these images and I could tell that some of the college students sitting around me hadn’t either.
Leahy came to UCO at the request of Campus Crusade for Christ whose leaders hoped to influence the students’ decision-making when it comes to healthy relationships.
Leahy described the images as pornographic and told the students that they send out messages and signals that could result in sexual addiction and damage relationships.
A counselor featured in Leahy’s video presentation said it best, I think.
She said the pornographic saturation sends out the message that women have to give sex to get love. Those same images and suggestions teach men that they must “conquer” a woman in order to be considered a “real” man.
Great fodder for a health relationship, huh?
Leahy said according to statistics, 8 to 10 percent of Americans will get addicted to porn. While that’s sad, even sadder is the percentage of Americans who continue to wink at the pornography that is negatively damaging relationships and families.
Leahy is hoping that some college students refuse to buy in to the images and messages that can result in hurting relationships.
“What you feed grows. What you starve dies,” he said.
He has written books, “Porn Nation: Conquering America’s No. 1 Addiction” and “Porn Nation (Student Edition)” which are to be released in May.
