Actually like all over municipalities in the US, and the world, when large groups form, either for protesting purposes or sit in a park, extra law enforcement is required.
This is a faked story, the kind that happens when news organizations accept press releases without critical question. The OCPD would have had patrols downtown in the absence of the occupy people. Police cars would drive past the Skirvin and Kerr Park on a routine basis every single night. Thus, a good bit of the "cost" calculated here would have been spent in all events, regardless of the presence of people in Kerr Park. The rest of the story, consisting of conservative talking points snark, is hardly the stuff of journalistic standards for objective reporting (even if I agree with it, it stinks as straight reporting rather than opinion). I have a question or two I'd like asked: how much of that money was wasted watching peaceful, law-abiding people doing nothing more than expressing an opinion? Were there no murders, robberies, drug deals or rapes to be investigated while those policemen were standing around doing nothing? Who sets priorities for police work and why would they put Kerr Park at the top of the list if it costs so much to do so little?

What would have happened had they not assigned any police to the protest? Why would they assign police to the protest? Did you do any investigation at all to see who actually requested the police presence, and if so, who's actually to blame for this expenditure?
