Obama’s Remarks on Energy in Nevada

President Barack Obama, suddenly a huge booster of domestic natural gas, unveiled some new initiatives in Las Vegas on Thursday. Here are excerpts from his prepared remarks. He deviated somewhat from them, even quoting the oft-heard phrase that the United States is now “the Saudi Arabia of natural gas.”

Part of my blueprint for an economy built to last is American energy. And that’s why we’re here today.

For decades, America has been talking about decreasing our dependence on foreign oil.…

Obama: Think About the America Within Our Reach

Here are excerpts from the speech President Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver at 8 p.m. central time on Tuesday:

“Think about the America within our reach: A country that leads the world in educating its people. An America that attracts a new generation of high-tech manufacturing and high-paying jobs. A future where we’re in control of our own energy, and our security and prosperity aren’t so tied to unstable parts of the world. An economy built to last, where hard work pays off, and responsibility is rewarded.…

First Lady’s Guest List Released for State of the Union Speech

Among those sitting in the House gallery with First Lady Michelle Obama for the state of the union speech on Tuesday night will be Warren Buffett’s secretary and the wife of the late Steve Jobs.
Buffett’s secretary, Debbie Bosanek, has become a regular part of President Barack Obama’s speeches since she pays a higher tax rate than her world-famous investor boss, according to Buffett himself. Obama has invoked the Buffett rule _ essentially, that middle-class wage earners shouldn’t pay a lower tax rate than the wealthy _ when talking about the need for higher tax rates on millionaires.…

The Oklahoman’s energy reporter, Jay Marks, had a story last week about the 1,200 jobs that could be created in Oklahoma and the impact on the crude supply hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, where the proposed Keystone XL would connect on its way to the Texas Gulf Coast.

The U.S. State Department held a hearing in Midwest City last summer about the proposed pipelne. Here is a transcript of that hearing.

EPA Releases Tool to Track Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency has developed an interactive tool to track the biggest stationary sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the country. Users can find the sources of emissions in their states and cities. The biggest sources in Oklahoma are power plants and refineries, though none come close to emitting the level of greenhouse gases cited in the Associated Press story below.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The most detailed data yet on emissions of heat-trapping gases show that U.S. power plants are responsible for the bulk of the pollution blamed for global warming.…

White House Says Natural Gas Boom Could Mean Substantial Economic Benefits

In a report released Wednesday to accompany President Barack Obama’s focus on renewed investment in the U.S. economy, the White House credits the natural gas boom for fueling economic expansion. Here is an excerpt from the report:

America’s Natural Resource Boom
Only a few years ago, fears of a looming natural gas shortage led to significant investments in the rapid
construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) port facilities that could enable the United States to import
vast quantities of natural gas.…

President Obama’s Speech in Osawatomie

President Barack Obama traveled to Osawatomie, Kansas, the site of a famous speech by Teddy Roosevelt, on Tuesday to give a major address about the middle class in America and broad philosophical approaches to tax policy and regulation. A speech that perhaps sets the framework for his 2012 campaign themes, it was also a direct rebuke to much of the work by House Republicans in 2011.
The speech appeared to be well-received in the home state of the president’s mother, one of the most Republican states in the country.…

On a serene Sunday morning 70 years ago, the skies above Pearl Harbor were darkened by the bombs of Japanese forces in a surprise attack that tested the resilience of our Armed Forces and the will of our Nation.
