Rep. James Lankford Mourns Death of Edmond Native SSgt. Rex Schad
Rep. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma City, issued a statement Wednesday about the killing of SSgt Rex Schad, an Edmond native shot in Afghanistan on Monday during a firefight started by a man dressed as a member of the Afghan police force. Schad graduated from Edmond Memorial High School in 2005.
“I am grieved by the loss of another Oklahoma son in Afghanistan,” said Lankford.
“Our hearts are broken to learn that SSgt. Rex Schad was taken from his family at such a young age while bravely serving his country in a hostile environment.…

Behenna Given Extension to File Appeal with U.S. Supreme Court
The U.S. Supreme Court has given 1st Lt. Michael Behenna an extension to file an appeal of his conviction of unpremeditated murder in a combat zone. He will now have until Jan. 3, an extension from the Nov. 4 deadline.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the military’s highest appeals court, upheld the Edmond native’s conviction in July. A U.S. Army appeals court has also upheld the conviction. In 2008, Behenna shot and killed an Iraqi man he suspected of being a terrorist.…

Some candidates seeking seats in the next Congress released statements on Thursday following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold most of the health care law.

Oral Arguments Set in Appeals Court for 1st Lt. Michael Behenna’s Case
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces _ the military’s highest appeals court _ has set oral arguments for April 23 in the case of 1st Lt. Michael Behenna, who was convicted in 2009 of unpremeditated murder in a combat zone.
The arguments will be held at the court’s headquarters in Washington, DC.
Behenna, an Edmond native now serving a 15-year sentence at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, was convicted of killing an Iraqi man that Behenna suspected of terrorism. Behenna was questioning the man when he shot him and claimed self-defense at his trial.…

Edmond Road being resurfaced
Road construction is continuing along Edmond Road between Kelly Avenue and Fretz Avenue.
Crews are working on the eastbound lanes, causing the traffic to be reduced to one way in both directions.
This is part of a street improvement project that will resurface 51/2 miles roads throughout the city. The project started May 24.
The top layers of the old asphalt and overlay are being removed and new asphalt will be cover the roadway, said Engineer Harry Fenton,.
Oklahoma Department of Transportation is overseeing the project that is being paid for with federal stimulus money.…

Edmond cyclists to ride on Friday
Edmond students and working folk will be participating in the fifth annual Bike to Work Day Friday.
The day is a celebration of bicycling as a healthy and fun form of transportation. The event is being held across the metro area. In Edmond, the event is being sponsored by the Edmond Bicycle Committee and Bike Edmond.
A group bike ride will start at 8 a.m. Friday at the University of Central Oklahoma Wellness Center parking lot off University Drive. It will end at OU Medical Center Edmond on Bryant Avenue.…

Edmond detention dedication set
Edmond’s recently-completed regional detention area will be dedicated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The detention area, located west of the railroad tracks, north of Hurd, is designed to take care of drainage problems in the downtown area.
“This project was crucial for the improvement of our downtown area and the future urban development,” said Councilman Charles Lamb.
The detention area covers 6 acres and cost $2.1 million. Money for the project came from sales tax revenue designated specifically for capital improvements and parks.…
