Boren currently serves on Natural Resources.

Here’s a release from Mullin’s office:

Newly elected Congressman Markwayne Mullin was selected by the Republican Steering Committee to serve on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, as well as the House Committee on Natural Resources.

Both committees have jurisdiction over key areas that are vital to Oklahoma’s Second Congressional District, including funding for roads, bridges and ports, along with being responsible for issues of mineral resources on public lands, and all matters regarding Native Americans and the hundreds of federally recognized tribes.

“I’m honored that the Steering Committee had the confidence in me to select me for membership on these very important committees,” said Mullin. “Both committees are so important to the Second District, whether you’re talking about roads and bridges, or the ports we have, or our Indian tribes and natural resources. Serving on these committees will help me serve the people of my district, and that’s what I’m here for. I’m ready to get to work.”

Mullin has spent two weeks in Washington D.C. since his election, attending official House orientation events, as well as meeting with members of the Steering Committee to discuss potential committee selections.

“When I started thinking about what committees I wanted to serve on, of course, I wanted to be on the committees that mean the most to our district, and these two really fit the bill,” Mullin said. “The Transportation Committee of course is an obvious one for us because we have vital ports, and all of our roads and bridges are critical, so that one is very important. And Natural Resources is a major part of so many things in the Second District like working with the tribes, dealing with water issues, and access to mineral rights. These really are great committees for our district.

“I’m glad to be serving on these committees, but no matter what committees I’m on, my mission in Congress is the same: we need to get spending under control so we can balance the budget and get out of debt.”

Mullin won’t become an official member of either committee until he is sworn in to office in January. In the mean time, Mullin said he will work on getting up to speed on upcoming issues so he can hit the ground running.

“I came up here to work, and that’s what I’ll be doing as long as I’m here,” said Mullin.

U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has chose Markwayne Mullin, the Republican nominee in the 2nd District congressional race in Oklahoma, to give the weekly GOP address on Saturday. Mullin is facing Democrat Rob Wallace and Independent Michael G. Fulks in the Nov. 6 election to replace retiring Rep. Dan Boren, D-Muskogee.

Here is the release from Boehner’s office:

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) today announced that Oklahoma small businessman and rancher Markwayne Mullin will deliver the Weekly Republican Address on Saturday, October 13.

“Small businesses continue to struggle in this weak economy, and all the taxing, spending and red tape coming from the Obama administration is only making things worse,” Speaker Boehner said. “Markwayne Mullin has run a business and created jobs, and he understands the need to shut down the jobs-destroying red tape factory in Washington, DC. I’m looking forward to hearing Markwayne’s address, and, if elected, I know he’ll be a strong voice in the House for a smaller, more accountable, and less costly government.”

“People in Oklahoma know our economy doesn’t need more regulations– it needs more certainty,” Mullin said. “If we’re serious about keeping jobs here and bringing jobs home, we need to stop burdening small businesses with excessive and unnecessary regulations. I’m honored to deliver this week’s Republican address, and will use this time to discuss how running a small businesses drives my campaign for solutions to restrain the government bureaucracy and promote long-term economic growth.”

Markwayne Mullin is an eastern Oklahoma native, successful businessman, and rancher, running to succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Dan Boren in Oklahoma’s Second Congressional District. Shortly after Markwayne graduated from Stilwell High School, his dad fell ill and the family’s small plumbing company encountered financial troubles. Markwayne was only 20 years old but he and his wife, Christie, took over with only six employees. Through hard work and discipline, Markwayne and Christie not only stabilized Mullin Plumbing, but grew it into the largest plumbing service company in Oklahoma.

The Second Congressional District, which includes the eastern Oklahoma towns of Muskogee and McAlester, is one of 25 pickup opportunities Republicans are targeting across the country this November. The Cook Political Report rates Markwayne’s race as “likely Republican.”

Democrat Wayne Herriman is new to politics, and even long-time incumbents sometimes make errors in filing campaign finance reports. But Herriman, of Muskogee, who is now in a run-off with Rob Wallace, of Fort Gibson, for the 2nd District congressional seat seems to be the only one of the Oklahoma newcomers running for Congress continually filing reports that fail to list his fundraising and expenditure totals for the entire election cycle.
Each time a candidate files a report, he or she must report their activities for that period, typically three months, and also give a running total of how much they’ve raised and spent since their candidacy began.
Herriman has now filed four reports that listed his activities for the period. But in the last three. he has put zeroes for the cumulative election totals.
The Federal Election Commission sent his campaign a letter on May 29 pointing out the problem (along with others) in the report he filed in April:

1. The totals listed on Line(s) 6(a), 6(c), 7(a), 7(c), 11(a)(iii), 11(e), 16, 17 and
22, Column B of the Summary and Detailed Summary Page(s) appear to be
incorrect. Column B figures for the Summary and Detailed Summary Pages
should equal the sum of the Column B figures on your previous report and the
Column A figures on this report. Please file an amendment to your report to
correct the Column B discrepancies for this report and all subsequent report(s)
which may be affected by this correction. Note that Column B should reflect
only the election cycle-to-date totals (11/3/10 through 11/6/12). (2 U.S.C. §
434(b) and 11 CFR § 104.3)

Herriman was supposed to have filed an amended report by July 3 but still has not done so. In the meantime, he has filed two more reports with the same problem.

This is a link to a directory of Herriman’s reports. The Request for Additional Information entry shows the letter from the FEC to Herriman.

Some candidates seeking seats in the next Congress released statements on Thursday following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold most of the health care law.

In the 5th District, currently represented by Rep. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma City, Democrat Tom Guild, of Edmond, said: “I am very pleased that the United States Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act. The fact that Republican and Bush Appointee Chief Justice Roberts cast the deciding vote to uphold the law is an important signal that the country needs to come together in a bipartisan fashion and create jobs and support education, pass the highway bill, and stop college student loans rates from doubling in two days.
“Progressive Republican President Teddy Roosevelt first introduced health care reform more than 100 years ago. However, without a Democratic Congress and President, the Affordable Care Act would have not been possible. The same folks who want to privatize Social Security, and have voted to end Medicare, want to undo the AFA even before it has fully gone into effect.
“The law already forbids insurance companies from refusing to cover children with pre-existing conditions. This will extend to adults with pre-existing conditions in 2014. The law now requires that 80-85% of the proceeds from insurance premiums be spent on those who are insured by each company. It prohibits large percentages to be spent on overhead including astronomic bonuses for health care company CEOs. The law outlaws lifetime caps on payouts to those with health insurance. This will reduce the number of folks who are forced into bankruptcy, because expensive and/or catastrophic health emergencies rack up bills that virtually no families can pay. It also allows families with children to keep their children on their health insurance policies until age 26. This is one of the most family-friend and pro-families laws in recent memory.”

In the 2nd District, where runoffs will be necessary to determine the Republican and Democratic nominees, the two GOP candidates reiterated their opposition to the health care law.

State Rep. George Faught, of Muskogee: “I am extremely disappointed in the Supreme Court’s ruling on ObamaCare, but as I did before in Oklahoma City I am ready to fight again in Washington for our precious freedoms. This ruling allows another huge expansion of federal bureaucracy and intrusion into the lives of individuals. The Court this morning in essence gave the American people two choices: either get used to health control and rationing as the huge federal bureaucracy chokes off our liberties, or completely repeal this outrageous overreach that has already spawned 18,000 pages of new job-killing federal regulations. Repeal can only be accomplished by electing proven conservatives who have demonstrated that they understand the issues and will take the fight to preserve our liberties to Washington.

“The people of Oklahoma spoke loud and clear in 2010 that they did not want ObamaCare in Oklahoma. I took their voice and their fight to the state capital and stopped it in its tracks, when others wanted to give in and take federal money to start implementing ObamaCare. I understand the issues and recognize the assault on our freedom that this represents.”

Markwayne Mullin, of Westville, said, ““This is an extremely sad day for our country.

“This makes us like socialized countries in Europe. Now every almost every American faces a tax increase disguised as a mandate to buy a particular product. This has to be one of the worst precedents in the history of the country.
“Make no mistake, businesses large and small will react to this ruling in a way that is negative to hard-working Americans. The costs are overwhelming. With my business, the choice I have is to employ fewer than 50 people, or pay at least $250,000 a year in what amounts to a new tax for health care compliance. I assure you I’m not the only businessman debating on what direction my company will go.”
“ObamaCare needs to be repealed, plain and simple.
“The only way to get rid of this terrible plan is for the House and Senate to overturn it and for the next president to toss it out. We must send leaders to Congress who will undo this damage and oppose Barack Obama’s socialist agenda. When I go to Washington to represent the good people of eastern Oklahoma, I will work day and night to repeal ObamaCare.”

The two Democrats in the 2nd District runoff, Wayne Herriman, of Muskogee, and Rob Wallace, of Muskogee, told the Oklahoman in interviews earlier this month that they did not support the health care law.

Democrat John Olson, of Tulsa, who is running for the 1st District seat, said, “Today’s ruling creates certainty for thousands of Oklahomans who faced the end of many broadly popular provisions of the health-care reform law.
“The heat and fury surrounding the Affordable Care Act obscured the fact that many parts of the law are broadly supported by Republicans and Democrats alike.
“Surveys show that over 80% of all Americans — from both parties — are in favor of allowing kids to stay on their parents’ insurance, not allowing women with breast cancer to be denied coverage and ending lifetime caps that forced families into bankruptcy.”
“I have said all along that the so-called individual mandate should be called what the Supreme Court has affirmed: a tax on those who choose not to buy insurance. All of us use the health-care system, whether we have insurance or not.
“I look forward to working in Congress to address the flaws in the ACA, and continue to improve and expand the right to affordable health care that we all share.”
