Markwayne Mullin, a Republican who will be sworn in next month as the new House member for Oklahoma’s 2nd District, announced some of his staff on Tuesday. Karl Ahlgren, former chief of staff to Tom Coburn when Coburn served in the House, will leave his political consulting firm to be Mullin’s top aide. Mullin is retaining some of the Oklahoma “field reps” that have worked the 2nd District for years helping constituents through the maze of federal bureaucracies.

Herriman Corrects Campaign Finance Reports

Wayne Herriman, the Muskogee Democrat running for Congress in the eastern Oklahoma district being vacated by Rep. Dan Boren, has amended three of his campaign finance reports to reflect his election cycle totals. Herriman filed amendments with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday for reports running from last October through June 7.
In the previous filings, Herriman had listed his contributions, loans and expenditures for the relevant period, but entered 0s in the column meant to show his cumulative totals.
As of Friday morning, Herriman had yet to amend his latest report, which was filed late last week, to show his running totals.…

Wayne Herriman’s Problems With Campaign Finance Reporting

Democrat Wayne Herriman is new to politics, and even long-time incumbents sometimes make errors in filing campaign finance reports. But Herriman, of Muskogee, who is now in a run-off with Rob Wallace, of Fort Gibson, for the 2nd District congressional seat seems to be the only one of the Oklahoma newcomers running for Congress continually filing reports that fail to list his fundraising and expenditure totals for the entire election cycle.
Each time a candidate files a report, he or she must report their activities for that period, typically three months, and also give a running total of how much they’ve raised and spent since their candidacy began.…

Oklahoma Congressional Candidates Speak Out on Health Care Ruling

Some candidates seeking seats in the next Congress released statements on Thursday following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold most of the health care law.

In the 5th District, currently represented by Rep. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma City, Democrat Tom Guild, of Edmond, said: “I am very pleased that the United States Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act. The fact that Republican and Bush Appointee Chief Justice Roberts cast the deciding vote to uphold the law is an important signal that the country needs to come together in a bipartisan fashion and create jobs and support education, pass the highway bill, and stop college student loans rates from doubling in two days.…

Did Precinct Workers Wind Up With a Lot of Extra “I Voted Today” Stickers?

According to the Oklahoma Election Board results, nearly half of the precincts have reported in the 2nd Congressional District, and only about 4,300 votes were counted, two-thirds coming in the Democratic primary. This is going to make for a very expensive election per vote for some of these candidates.
In 2010, there were interesting statewide primaries, including ones for governor. Still only about 24,000 people voted in the Republican primary for Congress that year. There are no statewide races to draw voters this year.…

Rob Wallace Winning Several Counties Early

Democrat Rob Wallace is beating Wayne Herriman and Earl Everett in most of the counties reporting in the 2nd congressional district, but Everett, despite not having near the campaign of the other two, is polling 13 percent. If he gets that much when all the votes are counted, it would be hard for Wallace or Herriman to win outright.…
