El Reno considering ban on aerosol containers to minors
At a later date, El Reno City Council members will take another look at a proposed ordinance that would have prohibited individuals younger than 18 from possessing aerosol spray containers.
City staff on Tuesday requested the item be tabled so they can have more time to review the proposal to make sure it’ll be effective, Deputy City Clerk Lindsey Grigg said.
The proposed ordinance would have prohibited individuals younger than 18 from purchasing aerosol containers or possessing them on private or public property unless they are accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, employer, teacher or property owner.…

Protesters use racial, homophobic slurs toward congressmen
Sunday’s health care vote has drawn intense passions from both sides, which can be a good thing because it encourages more people to become active in the political process.
But something occurred that made me question which century we are living in. I looked at my calendar, and it said the current year is 2010. But on Sunday, I honestly thought it was the 1950s all over again.
While Congressmen John Lewis and Andre Carson were at the Capitol to cast their votes on the health care bill, they said some of the protesters shouted racial slurs at them.…

Bethany approves road projects using stimulus money
Bethany City Council members this week approved an agreement with the state Transportation Department for two road improvement projects using funds from the federal economic stimulus package.
The project entails overlaying Rockwell Avenue from NW 16 to NW 23 and on NW 36 from Rockwell to Hammond avenues. It also will include installing ramps for the disabled.
The state Transportation Department has been authorized to use $589,898 in stimulus funds for the project.
According to the agreement, the Transportation Department will pay all costs and handle the bid process.…

Bethany to consider stimulus road project
Bethany City council members March 16 will consider an agreement with the state Transportation Department for two road improvement projects using funds from the federal economic stimulus package.
The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at city hall, 6700 NW 36.
If approved, crews would overlay Rockwell Avenue from NW 16 to NW 23 and on NW 36 from Rockwell to Hammond avenues.

Yukon to build new fire station
Yukon city officials are planning a project to build a new facility to house Fire Station 2.
At a previous meeting, city council members selected Oklahoma City-based Triad Design Group to provide architectural services for a new station.
Fire Station 2 will be on State Highway 66 (E Main Street) west of Mustang Road. It will replace the existing station next to the police department at 102 S Ranchwood Blvd.
Triad Design Group will be paid $390,000.
According to the contract, the company is responsible for conducting studies, surveys and developing possible construction plans.…

Bethany approves jail agreement with Yukon
Bethany City Council members this week approved an agreement that allows Bethany police to house some inmates in Yukon City jail if they are sentenced to more than 10 days.
The city currently pays the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department $42.58 per inmate per day to use its jail space. Yukon currently charges $30 per inmate per day for municipalities to use its jail.
As part of the agreement, Bethany would be responsible for inmate records, attorney’s fees if an inmate files litigation for wrongful arrests, and repairs if an inmate causes damage to the facility.
Yukon would provide basic medical care for the inmates, including over-the-counter medications, but Bethany would continue to pay the cost of hospitalization, prescription medication and surgical or dental treatment.…

Canadian County special election today
Canadian County residents can vote in the primary special election today for the Canadian County District 3 commissioner’s seat.
The Republican candidates are Audre Knott, 41; Joshua C. Moore, 34; Jack Stewart, 60; Ray Melvin, 66; and Daniel Pugh, 58.
Knott, Moore and Melvin reside in El Reno, Stewart is from Yukon and Pugh is a Calumet resident.
The Democratic candidates are C.A. Wilkinson, 68, of El Reno and John Y. Morris, 47, of Calumet.
The primary election is March 2, and the general election is April 6. Grant Hedrick held the seat until he died Nov.…

Yukon to upgrade base map
The city of Yukon is upgrading its base map.
The city will pay Pinnacle Mapping Technologies Inc to $28,648 to provide mapping services and digital surveying.
The services are part of a project initiated by the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments to create an aerial photography base map for central Oklahoma.
Other governments participating are Oklahoma City, Norman, Midwest City, Edmond and Oklahoma County.
Pinnacle Mapping Technologies Inc is based in Indianapolis.

Fee increase for Yukon utility customers
Utility customers in Yukon saw a 3 percent increase on their last bill.
The fee increase affected about 8,400 households that are billed for water, garbage and sewage.
In 2007, city council members approved a plan to increase the rate every calendar year through 2010. The 3 percent hike this year will be used to offset the cost of purchasing water from Oklahoma City.
There are only 15 wells located in Yukon. Therefore, the city spends $1 million annually to purchase water from Oklahoma City.…
