Capitol Bureau reporter Michael McNutt today is writing about Oklahoma legislators reversing themselves already this legislative session. The House on Wednesday voted down an appropriations bill for the state Space Industry Development Authority, which oversees the Oklahoma Spaceport near Burns Flat. After some apparent political wrangling and arm-twisting, House members changed course today and approved the measure. An interesting angle in McNutt’s story in terms of the usefulness of a spaceport in Oklahoma is a comment from Rep. Todd Russ, R-Cordell, whose district the spaceport is in. Russ said the spaceport is attractive for certain ventures, including training for unmanned drones, which are becoming more prevalent in today’s military. He also hinted there may be more action at the spaceport, saying “We are on the brink of possibly having some very large breakthroughs.” At the same time, Russ said if there are no serious developments at the spaceport in the next three years, than he would talk to legislators about closing it down. You can read more about this issue in Friday’s edition of The Oklahoman and at NewsOK.com/politics.
