Two candidates filed late Friday afternoon for U.S. House District 3 against incumbent Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Cheyenne. There are now five candidates in that race.

Filing on Friday were William Sanders an independent candidate from Stillwater and Frankie Robbins, a Democrat from Medford.

Sanders, 42, served for 12 years with the Oklahoma National Guard as a supply specialist and was discharged last year.

He said he is unhappy with the partisan bickering and gridlock.

“As a superpower we shouldn’t be in the bottom tier of anything,” Sanders said. “The alternative is just to sit at home and yell and scream, but that won’t accomplish much.”

Robbins, 66, is a retired civil engineer who worked for the U.S. Forest Service.

“I came back to give back and make a difference,” Robbins said. “I hope I can make a difference by adding a civil discourse and common sense discussion of the issues.”

RJ Harris filed as an independent candidate for U.S. House District 4 on Friday dropping his presidential bid and aiming for a rematch against U.S. Rep. Tom Cole for the district that runs from south Oklahoma City to the Texas border.

Cole filed for reelection on Wednesday.

Harris, 39, of Norman, said he is filing as an independent to get around the Republican Party and offer voters a true conservative in the November general election. Harris described himself as a Libertarian or Congressional Conservative.

He ran against Cole, R-Moore, in 2010 for Congress and got 23 percent of the vote in the primary.

“I’m a huge advocate of ending our interventionist foreign policy,” Harris said after he had filed. “I am going to repeal as much legislation as possible because I see that as restricting liberties.”

Harris said top on his list is repealing the healthcare reform, the National Defense Authorization Act and the Patriot Act.

In addition to Harris and Cole, there are two other candidates in the race.

Republican Gary Caissie, 51, of Norman filed for the seat and so did Donna Bebo, 34, a Democrat from Fletcher.

Rob Wallace, assistant District Attorney in Pittsburg County filed Friday morning for U.S. House District 2, becoming the tenth candidate in the race and the third Democrat seeking the seat left vacant by U.S. Rep. Dan Boren.

Wallace, 48, was the District Attorney for LeFlore and Latimer counties from 1999-2004 and left to be a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s office in Muskogee.

“I think we need some common sense in Washington,” Wallace, of Fort Gibson, said. “The games being played are costing jobs out here in the real world.”

On the last day to file as a candidate for political office in November, all 132 open offices have at least one candidate. There are many incumbents who are unchallenged, though.

The deadline to file is at 5 p.m. and election officials expect last minute filers to come later in the day.

Only one candidate has filed so far Friday morning. Aaron Kaspereit, a drama teacher at Midwest City High School, put his name on the list of candidates for House District 88.

Kaspereit challenged incumbent Rep. David Dank in 2010 for House District 85 and lost, but redistricting put him in a district without an incumbent.

He is the sixth candidate and second Republican to file for the seat left vacant by former Rep. Al McAffrey, a Democrat, when he ran for and won Senate District 46.

Kaspereit said once in office he will work to give school districts more flexibility and autonomy to implement the things they see as priorities.

“I’ve got a moderate enough view that I’ll appeal to the Democrats,” Kaspereit said.

He filed Friday before heading down to Norman to watch his students compete in the state drama competition.

An independent candidate filed Thursday for U.S. House District 5 in Oklahoma, Pottawatomie and Seminole counties.

The race was shaping up to be a match between two Edmond residents: U.S. Rep. James Lankford, the Republican incumbent, and Tom Guild, a Democrat who tried for the seat.

But Pat Martin, a 28-year-old digital land manager from Jones, filed Thursday as an independent candidate in the race.

Unless another candidate files in the race by Friday at 5 p.m. it looks like there won’t be a primary.

Already three Republicans have filed for Senate District 33, but no Democrats have filed yet.

All three candidates are from Broken Arrow: Don P. Little, 67; Nathan Dahm, 29; and Tim Wright, 61.

The district was substantially changed through the last redistricting and no longer encompasses the mid-town area of Tulsa, but now is in south Tulsa and Broken Arrow.

A sixth Republican filed Thursday for U.S. House District 2 in eastern Oklahoma that is being left vacant by U.S. Rep. Dan Boren who isn’t seeking reelection.

Former state Rep. Wayne Pettigrew filed Thursday afternoon for the seat, bringing the race total to six Republicans and two Democrats.

Pettigrew, 49, of McAlester, said his background in finance will distinguish him in this race.

“We’re going to have to reform our monetary system,” Pettigrew said. “We are devaluing our currency by printing additional money without bullion backing.”

He said the issue is made worse by continued over spending by government and the growing debt.

Pettigrew said his degree in finance and business and his conservative voting record from the state House make him a strong candidate.

He estimates the race is going to cost at least $500,000 per candidate.
