Rep. James Lankford to Seek House GOP Leadership Post
Rep. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma City, is planning to run for chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee, a leadership position, when the House reconvenes next week. He is currently unopposed for the spot, which is now held by Rep. Tom Price, of Georgia.
Lankford is still a freshman. He won a second term on Tuesday. He would be the first Oklahoman on the leadership team since Rep. Tom Cole, R-Norman, ran the National Republican Congressional Committee.
The policy committee helps develop House Republican positions on various issues.
Lankford said Thursday, “I’m not one who has a passion for politics. I do have a passion for ideas.”
He said colleagues have been talking to him for months about seeking the position.
Lankford, 44, quickly became a favorite of House Republican leaders in his first term and a frequent guest on news programs.
Twenty years ago, another Oklahoma City Republican was chairman of the House GOP Policy Committee _ former Rep. Mickey Edwards.
