Contractors, Others Spent Nearly $64,000 for Mike Thompson
Business Leaders of Oklahoma, a group organized recently to get involved in political races, has spent nearly $64,000 on advertising to help state Rep. Mike Thompson, R-Oklahoma City, win the Republican primary for the 5th District congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin.
A report filed with the Federal Election Commission shows several construction and development companies in the Oklahoma City area made $74,000 worth of donations to the group.
There was a quick turnaround: The first donations were made on June 30, and the Virginia-based media company that did the ad was paid a week later.
The FEC report was signed by Robert E. Stem, lobbyist for the Association of Oklahoma General Contractors.
Under federal election law, the ad for Thompson is considered an independent expenditure _ money spent for a candidate by a group that’s not directly affiliated with the campaign. Under the law, the expenditure can’t be coordinated with the campaign.
A run-off is expected after the GOP primary, and Thompson is trying to make his way into that. A SoonerPoll survey released last week showed that he was trailing Oklahoma City attorney Kevin Calvey and Baptist youth camp director James Lankford.
Here’s a copy of the FEC report filed by Business Leaders of Oklahoma.
