Nickles endorses Leonard for attorney general

Former U.S. Sen. Don Nickles has endorsed Ryan Leonard for attorney general.

Leonard’s campaign issued a release on the nod yesterday. Leonard is seeking the Republican nomination for the state’s top legal officer.

No big surprises there in Nickles’ endorsement. Leonard, a former prosecutor in Canadian County, worked for Nickles as a senior aide for four years in Washington, D.C.  Nickles, a Republican, represented Oklahoma from 1981 to 2005.  U.S. Rep. Tom Coburn now holds that congressional seat.

Nickles said:

It is critical in 2010 that Oklahoma elect an Attorney General who will fight to protect our families, and has the passion and will to stand up for the Constitution in the face of unprecedented federal encroachment into our daily lives.

Former lawmaker and Oklahoma City Redhawks owner Scott Pruitt is also running on the Republican ballot. Democrat Jim Priest is the only Democrat seeking the seat being vacated by Democrat Drew Edmondson, who is running for governor.
