Abortion bills on committee agenda

Lawmakers are wrapping up a busy week of committee work. In the Senate Health and Human Services meeting this morning, lawmakers will consider several abortion related bills, including HB 2780. That measure requires women to have an ultrasound before an abortion is performed.

It will likely garner a lot of debate as it did when it passed the House.

Edmond’s motorcycle course rolling statewide

A new state-of-the-art mobile classroom to be used to teach civilian motorcyclists across the state will be revealed Tuesday in Norman.

The classroom and equipment were purchased for the Edmond Police Department with a $150,000 grant from Oklahoma Highway Safety Office.

The statewide Motorcycle Survival Course will mirror Edmond’s course they first offered to more experienced riders in 1978. The free course, offered twice a year, has trained hundreds of  Edmond motorcyclists.

Coburn amendments to health care reconciliation

Sen. Tom Coburn has authored several amendments to the package of changes to the health care bill signed today by President Barack Obama. One proposed amendment would prohibit insurance coverage of Viagara or other ED drugs for sex offenders.

Protesters use racial, homophobic slurs toward congressmen

Sunday’s health care vote has drawn intense passions from both sides, which can be a good thing because it encourages more people to become active in the political process.

Republicans urge Attorney General to file suit

Calling it a sad day for American, Oklahoma House and Senate Republicans say the federal health care reform bill will cost the state billions and make it more difficult for state’s to address their indigent population.

Nearly 40 Republicans gathered Monday afternoon to express their displeasure for the health care reform bill that passed Congress last night.

Republicans are asking Attorney General Drew Edmondson to file a lawsuit objecting to the far-reaching powers of the federal government.

Southern Baptist leader compares health care vote to Pearl Harbor

I’ve gotten e-mails today from all manner of groups responding to the House health care reform vote. Here’s one that says a bill intended to make care available for more people — especially ones with preexisting conditions — will actually shorten the lives of Americans. In effect. according to Southern Baptists, it’s a torture and kill bill.

Officials react to passage of national health care bill

Senate Republicans have scheduled a press conference for this afternoon to weigh in on the Congressional vote on the national health care plan last night.

Check out this video from our Washington bureau, talking to state leaders. Good stuff. This morning Rep. Mary Fallin, R-Okla., is urging Attorney General Drew Edmondson to join to other states attorneys general in filing suit against the plan.

Democrat to enter 5th congressional district fray

 A Democrat is poised to enter the 5th Congressional District race, which already has attracted six Republicans and one independent.

 

Tom Guild of Edmond has scheduled a state Capitol news conference at 10 a.m. Thursday to announce his candidacy to succeed U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin, R-Oklahoma City. Fallin is not seeking a third term to run for governor.
