Last week in the rotunda
Last week was deadline week for bills to make it out of their chamber of origin. A flurry of bills passed. House bills will now head to the Senate. Senate bills head to the House.
Here are some highlights from last week:
Take a look at bills that survived and those that didn’t in this Sunday story from the Capitol Bureau.
Credits for electric cars hit some bumps. These bills seek to limit the credit that at one time cut the price of an electric car in half. Here’s the story on the House legislation. The Senate passed a similar measure.
School supplies would be exempt during the sales tax holiday. Groceries would be exempt, under a measure passed by Sen. Jay Paul Gumm, D-Durant.
An effort to allow people to openly carry guns failed last week in the House. The measure offered some spirited debate. The House also had emotional debate over a measure against President Barack Obama’s health care plan.
Former lawmakers couldn’t return to the Capitol to lobby for two years under a measure that passed the Senate.
Those are just a few of the highlights from last week. We’re expecting this week to be pretty slow as lawmakers begin the first week of committee work on bills from the opposite house. And it’s Spring Break, which means some lawmakers brought their children to work today…and they will be less likely to work late into the night when Junior is in the office.
