Sometimes there just isn’t enough room in the newspaper for all the pictures that we take. I’ve written about this before, but to put it in perspective, in the last 20 days, we’ve put roughly 1,900 pictures into the Merlin archive system. 1,400 or so were never published in the paper, although many of those have been seen online in our photo galleries, in blog posts or in slideshows.
Here are a few of the many pictures that you may not have seen in the newspaper.

In the last 12 days, the War in Afghanistan has affected families close to home, we’ve had swings in the weather between extreme heat and severe storms, OU and OSU started up the football season, students went back to school and grass fires started around the Oklahoma City Metro area.
Here’s a couple of pictures that stood out over the last two weeks. You can see all of our photo galleries by clicking here.

This summer three photography students joined The Oklahoman Photo department as interns; Zach Gray, from Oklahoma State, Garett Fisbeck from the University of Central Oklahoma and Ashley R. West from the University of Oklahoma. Friday is their last official day as interns. Here’s a few our favorite images they produced that you may not have seen on Alternate Crop before.
Hopefully, we gave them a chance to photograph the different types of assignments that news photographers are typically sent to. You can see more images from the 2011 summer interns and staff photographers at The Oklahoman by clicking here. There have been a couple of new slideshows recently too, including one about the Oklahoma City Royals senior softball team, by Garett Fisbeck.

I looked through Merlin today and collected a few pictures that probably deserve a second look. They represent what we’ve been up to over the last couple of weeks. You’ve seen blog posts on Alternate Crop about the triple digit heat here in central Oklahoma and about the International Finals Youth Rodeo. We’ve also been noodling, photographed fires, rain storms, and little league baseball.
There are plenty of photo galleries of those events and more that you can see by clicking here.

I looked through all the pictures we’ve taken in the last 21 days trying to find the best pictures that haven’t been published in the newspaper. There’ve been several blog entries on this topic over the years. Sometimes there just isn’t room for all the pictures that we wish we could get in the paper. Here’s a couple that stood out over the last three weeks.

Mary’s minis

On Saturday, I had an assignment in Stillwater that completely fell through as I was halfway up the turnpike on my way into town. It was my only assignment of the day, so I thought I might as well go ahead and take a trip to my old college town and see if I could find a picture in the way that Oklahoman photog John Clanton often does on Sundays.
I drove around for a while, but when the temperature is more than 100 degrees, there aren’t a lot of people who stay outside. So with my gas gauge drooping, I decided I had better leave town.
My last-ditch effort was to take a route that goes between Perkins to Guthrie instead of heading straight for I-35. Every time I go this way, I notice all of the mini horses and desperately want to stop.

It would turn out to be my lucky day as I noticed a woman out and about around horses. I quickly pulled in and introduced myself to Mary Shellhammer.
After following her around for a few minutes, she invited me inside to share about her life and her love for horses.
