Staff Photographers have been busy in the last few days photographing everything from baby elephants to music festivals. Here’s a couple of images that you may not have seen in the newspaper. We’ve made plenty of photo galleries from our assignments as well. Follow these links to see images from the Norman Music Festival, 89er Day Parade, the 2011 Festival of the Arts, the new baby elephant at the zoo, or the Thunder’s second round loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. The rain started to fall not long after runners and their families gathered at the Survivor Tree at the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon was delayed 30 minutes due to the rain and lightning on Sunday, but the races were held despite the cold, wet weather. Three staff photographers from The Oklahoman were positioned around the course to document the 11th annual marathon around the city, including a wedding at the 6 mile mark.

In the last 10 days or so, Staff Photographers at The Oklahoman have turned in some nice pictures, not all of which have gotten published in the newspaper. Here’s a few pictures that deserve a second look.
We’ve turned in plenty of photo galleries, that you can see by clicking here, including galleries from the start of the NBA playoffs in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma State’s win during the Bedlam baseball series and the Southwest Street Rod Nationals. We’ve also put up a few slideshows recently, including one about sidewalk chalk and one about singers auditioning to sing the National Anthem for the RedHawks.

Watching the Clouds Go By
The other night I had a few minutes of down time before the start of a high school soccer game that I was shooting at Deer Creek. As I waited for the game to start, my mind began to wonder just like a kid that plays the outfield in t-ball, and I began to notice the very interesting cloud formations that were floating by overhead. In order to not let them go to waste, I grabbed my camera and went to work. Here are a few of the clouds formations I captured. You can see a few more photo in the photo gallery.

Springtime Macro

My daughter and I collected a dandelion bouquet at the park last week. Well, I was the one holding the bouquet. She likes to pick the flowers and occasionally try to blow out the seeds, but she doesn’t like to hold more than one flower at a time. Over the years, I’ve killed thousands of dandelions in my yard, but standing out in the park the other day, I held the flowers in the sunlight and looked at how beautiful and complex they really are.
We have a 50mm macro lens in our pool closet up in the office. Since that trip to the park, I borrowed the 50mm for a few days to collect some pictures of dandelions. Here are three of my favorites.

Construction continues

Oklahoma City’s skyline is changing. After two years of construction, the new Devon Energy Tower is now taller than the Chase Tower, and construction is still underway. So far, we’ve turned in about 250 pictures going back to a press conference about the proposed building in August 2008. Since then nearly every staff photographer has a picture of some aspect of the construction, whether it’s a skyline picture, weather feature, construction picture and even a crane that tipped over.
Here’s a few pictures over the last couple of years. I’ve made a gallery featuring more of the 250 pictures that you can see here.

Pictures I Like-So far this month

So far this month, Staff photographers at The Oklahoman have put over 1,100 images into our archive system. I thought that seemed like a high number and attributed it to the snow storms. When I looked up the same time period over the last few years, however, we turned in about the same amount in the first 13 days of February 2010 and 2009 we turned in nearly 1,400 images.
We’re getting back into a more normal routine after the recent snow storms. No early deadlines or assignments canceled because of ice and snow this week. There are plenty of images to catch up on from the end of last week and some good stories to look for on the Alternate Crop blog site in the next few days. Here’s a last look at some of the blizzard images you may have missed last week, as well as gymnastics and Rumble the Bison. We’ve put up galleries about the PBR events in Oklahoma City over the weekend as well as galleries from Oklahoma City Thunder games that you can watch by clicking here and remember that you can click the images on this post to see them on a dark background.

Staff Photographers from The Oklahoman spent Wednesday morning photographing the second major snowstorm in the last two weeks. We’ve compiled a gallery of images that you can see by clicking here. If either of you missed the time lapse video we put together of the last major storm you can either scroll down a couple of posts or click here. If you’re interested in vague Star Wars references, then you might also be interested in this post from a few weeks ago.

Blizzard
Just before the snowfall started, Nate Billings had the idea to do a time-lapse video of the blizzard from multiple locations. He set up a camera on the ninth floor of the OPUBCO tower at Britton and Broadway in Oklahoma City on Monday night. I braced a camera to a ladder in my garage to get images of the snow piling up in the window, and Sarah Phipps set one up in the front window of her home in NW Oklahoma City.
We attached Pocket Wizard receivers to our Canon Mark II cameras and set them to take a picture every 20 seconds. To avoid glare off of the windows that could ruin the effect, you have to mask off the area around the lens. To do this I nailed an old blanket to the top of the window and draped it over my camera. On the sides of the windows, I propped up two large pieces of cardboard. This kept the garage light or the light from the kitchen from refecting off the glass.
We started recording around 11 pm on Monday night and let the cameras take pictures all night long. I turned off my camera at about 12:45 pm on Tuesday.
We ended up with three very different time-lapse videos that we edited together to make this video.
As always, you can see images from the blizzard and all of our photo galleries by clicking here.
