A busy holiday weekend
Over the weekend, I photographed Edmond’s LibertyFest parade, ParkFest and the fireworks. Fourth of July always provides great opportunities to make great images. Most are patriotic and colorful.

However, my favorite image from the weekend was from an eerie scene following the fireworks show at the University of Central Oklahoma. The campus was blanketed in a thick layer of smoke and as people left their cars lights created this spooky scene.

Superstitious
I know it is unfounded and nothing is true to predict any outcome of events, but I have to admit to being a little superstitious. So being that I had the opportunity to cover the start of the NCAA baseball post season regional (which if you did not know is most likely the most superstitious based sports there is around) I always find it interesting to watch for the little thing baseball players do to insure a win. Here is a portrait I captured of the University of Oklahoma’s Garrett Buechele wearing his glove over his hat. Almost at all times Buechele wears his glove this way except when he is covering third base for the Sooners as they move on to the Super Regional this week. Maybe it does work??

Marathon Day

Catherine Tedesco and James Tedesco hold hands as they cross the finish line during the Tenth Annual Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon in Oklahoma City on Sunday, April 25, 2010. By John Clanton, The Oklahoman
I enjoy photographing the finish line at a marathon. There’s so much emotion, exhaustion, relief all at once. So many stories. Some runners celebrate when they get to the end, others cry or get a hug from a family member, some just turn off their stopwatch and keep moving. I want to chase down every person that reacts as they cross the finish line. Ask them where they’re from, what makes them run, why they’re so excited. But right then, another couple crosses the line, holding hands and smiling. I forget the last runners and wonder about them instead.

Life on MLK part 4

Sharon McMillan serves Jeannette Robinson at the Carican Flavors, 2701 N. Martin Luther King Ave., restaurant is shown, Thursday, Jan. 14, 2009. Photo by Sarah Phipps, The Oklahoman
Sharon McMillan left her corporate job to chase a dream. In August 2005 she opened a Caribbean-American restaurant on the city’s northeast side.
“On this side of town, I thought that there was a definite need for a restaurant like mine because most folks in this neighborhood seem to have to go out of their neighborhood to different restaurants and so forth,” she said.
Her restaurant offers heathy “home-style” meals.
McMillan’s version of the American dream began as a teenager when she immigrated to America from Trinidad with her parents.
“It started with my parents, I have to say, for them it was an opportunity to leave poverty. For them, to come to a place where they can have opportunity for jobs, opportunity for education. And when they came and they brought us with them they transferred those same ideas to us, ” She said.
McMillan dreams to see her business grow and to continue to have the opportunity provide healthy meals to the neighborhoods surrounding her restaurant.

Candlelight Vigil
Last Night, Bryan Terry photographed a candlelight vigil to honor Summer Rust and her four children who were killed last year in El Reno. The picture on today’s front page captures the heartache that the Rust family and the community are still feeling. Click here to read the story from the vigil.
