Three photographers and thousands of Thunder pictures

The Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday at the OKC Arena. They’ll advance to the Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. Three photographers covered game 7 for the Oklahoman. Using remotes, hand held cameras and one photographer roaming the OKC Arena for pictures of fans reacting to the game, we took a total of 8,916 pictures. Then we spent several hours sorting through the images that we use to tell the story of the game.

Somewhere between posts about the Oklahoma City Thunder, the National Day of Prayer, the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and a rainy Sunday afternoon, there were some nice images taken by photographers at The Oklahoman that got left off of Alternate Crop. Here’s a few of them. A couple of these were published in the paper, but a couple of them weren’t.

A damp marathon in Oklahoma City

The rain started to fall not long after runners and their families gathered at the Survivor Tree at the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon was delayed 30 minutes due to the rain and lightning on Sunday, but the races were held despite the cold, wet weather. Three staff photographers from The Oklahoman were positioned around the course to document the 11th annual marathon around the city, including a wedding at the 6 mile mark.

The Oklahoma City Thunder just won game 2 of the first round of NBA Playoffs against the Denver Nuggets. Here’s a couple of images from tonight’s game at the OKC Arena in downtown Oklahoma City. Occasionally, we have the opportunity to photograph a unique assignment. Something we’ve never seen before. Staff Photographer Sarah Phipps had that opportunity on Sunday when she covered camel and ostrich races, called Extreme Racing, at Remington Park in Oklahoma City. Since the LA Lakers ended the Thunder season in April 2010, we’ve turned in over 1,300 pictures of the Oklahoma City Thunder. That number includes press conferences, appearances by players at schools and community centers, practices and, of course, all the games from the 2010-2011 season played at the OKC Arena.

AP/ONE Awards

Winners in the annual AP/ONE Awards were announced last night during a banquet in Oklahoma City. The awards recognize the best photographs, stories, and websites during the 2010 calendar year. The Oklahoman Photo department won a host of awards including first place in every category for still photographers; Sports, Spot News, General News, Feature, Website Photo and Photo Package, as well as the Sweepstakes Award in Photography. Here’s a couple of the winning images. Readers of Alternate Crop will recognize some of these pictures, since we’ve written about them in previous posts.
When contest time rolls around, we start gathering up our favorite pictures from the last year and put them in a folder in our archives. Here’s a gallery of all the pictures that were nominated for this year’s AP contest. Not all of these were used, of course, but it still makes for a gallery of nice images.
