Pictures I Like-Farewell to the Interns version

This summer’s interns in the Photo Department left The Oklahoman last week after a quick, eight-week internship. Both Miranda Grubbs, who joined us from the University of Colorado, and Mitchell Alcala, who joined us from Oklahoma State University, achieved what we hope for all of our interns. They improved their portfolio of pictures, got more experience with newspaper assignments and most importantly, showed a marked improvement over the internship. Here’s a couple of pictures from Miranda and Mitch that you may or may not have seen this summer. As always, you can see more of our work, and work from our interns, by clicking here.

It’s been too long since we updated Pictures I Like, so I’ll refresh you in case either of you have forgotten since the last time. Occasionally, we’ll comb through Merlin, our archive system, and find pictures that deserve a look, or, in the case of some of these photographs, deserve another look before we move on to more assignments and stories.

There have been some nice pictures hitting Merlin in the last week. I wanted to get a few published here, just in case either of you had missed them. Bryan Terry is putting on a clinic on proper use of a 50mm @ 1.4 (above). Our interns Miranda Grubbs and Mitchell Alcala are turning in some good work, and Jim Beckel got a classic summer-time feature. As always you can look at galleries of our pictures here.

Long Day at the Ball Park

Oklahoma's Tyler Ogle (35) reacts with teammate Danny Black (9) after Ogle's game winning score during the bottom of the ninth inning in the Sooners' 3-2 win in the fourth game of the Big 12 Baseball Championship between Oklahoma and Kansas at the Bricktown Ballpark on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, in Oklahoma City, Okla. Photo by Chris Landsberger, The Oklahoman

Yesterday I had the assignment to cover the last two evening session games of the four game set in the Big 12 Baseball Championship at Bricktown Ballpark. It looked as though it was going to be a great day to cover some baseball, but Mother Nature had other thoughts. The first game that started at 4pm between Baylor and Kansas State lasted all of an inning and a half before the rain decided to make an appearance and stay awhile. After about a three hour rain delay, and chasing around weather features, the Bears and the Wildcats went back into action to finish their game under the full moon.

The second game between OU and Kansas was to start at 7:30 now was pushed back to a start time of about 10:35 pm. Since my deadline to get photos back to the paper was 10:45 pm, I have just enough time to shoot OU’s starting pitcher at the top of the inning and their first few at bat in the bottom of the inning before I had to start sending photos back.

I went back out to the field when I was done transmitting to try and get some much needed ‘better’ photos. Which did not go so well. For a fan, the game was great KU had a no hitter going to the 5th inning, and the 1-0 lead over the Sooners, but for a photographer who is in need of some action photographs it was not what I was looking for in a late game. I kept telling myself the next inning will be better, the next inning will be better, and the next thing you know it was the bottom of the 9th inning at 1:15 am with KU holding onto a 2-1 lead. Then karma decided to pay it forward for me since I had done my time for the day when the Sooners hit a two run shot to win the game 3-2. Photos of the Sooners’ celebration made it well worth the wait to finally get to bed at 3am.

Here are a few photos from the two games. Click HERE for full gallery.

Looking through our photo archive after the weekend, it was hard to find picture that wasn’t taken at a basketball game. Here’s a couple of pictures from the high school championship games that jumped out at me, but really, there isn’t room on the blog for all the pictures I thought were good. Check out the galleries to see more high school basketball.

OKC National Memorial in snow

Bryan Terry went to the Oklahoma City National Memorial at night during one of our recent winter storms and got some beautiful pictures. I meant to put these photos up a few weeks ago, but something kept coming up. Since good photographs don’t have an expiration date, here they are now.

People On Sundays-Mike

Professional Bull Rider Mike Lee listens to spiritual music during a church service at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010. Photo by John Clanton, The Oklahoman

As church services begin, Mike Lee sits alone near the top of section 117. Below him, on the arena floor, employees tape up advertisements in anticipation of the PBR event in a few hours. Gates squeak gently before slamming shut, bulls fidget in their pins, and lights flicker on around the arena. As spiritual music continues, Mike, a professional bull rider from Decatur, Tx.,  leans back in his chair, his eyes closed. “I’m not thinking about bull riding,” he says after the service ends, “Thinking is too slow for bull riding.” Mike attends the PBR’s christian outreach, called Riding High, every week in a different arena around the country. Mike says he’s looking for something to give him peace. “You got to have your heart right when you’re on a bull.”

I used a 100mm macro lens to photograph icicles as they melted outside my house in The Village on Tuesday. I’d been looking for an excuse to use it. Last week I published a post where I implied that this slideshow was a result of staff photographer Sarah Phipps making the most of an assignment. Actually, the frog and turtle race would be better described as an assignment that Sarah brought to the newspaper and NewsOK.com.
