I’ve been meaning to put some sports pictures up for a few days. With staff photographers covering football, volleyball, softball, and now Thunder basketball, we’ve had some remarkable pictures to look at in Merlin. Here are some of my favorites from the last few weeks. Most of these you may not have seen because they weren’t published in the newspaper. After the games that we cover, we always post a gallery full of images, you can see all the photo galleries by clicking here.

Honoring Kody Turner

The Chickasha players silently raised their helmets adorned with the No. 74 during the opening kickoff against Capitol Hill last week at Chickasha High School.
It was the first home game for the Chicks since lineman Kody Turner died on Sept. 17.
The crowd stood silently as they watched the ball sail through the air into the arms of the Chicks’ return man.
Then on the first play of the game, the team honored their fallen teammate.
With a stillness in the air, Chickasha hiked the ball minus a left guard, Turner’s position. Then they took a knee.
The silence continued as quarterback Chase Rodgers handed the ball to head coach Rick VanCleave who then presented the ball to Turner’s mother, Crystal Coleman.
A somber crowd stood still as Coleman was also presented with Turner’s jersey.
The quiet continued as coach and mom embraced on the 50-yard line with the game ball in hand.
Then an emotional Coleman turned to the crowd and raised the ball in the air. The stadium erupted in a roar.

Deja Vu
“Barry Sanders scores his third touchdown” is something I have not put in a photo caption for quite awhile, but I did last night. Not THE Barry Sanders from OSU and the NFL Hall of Famer, but his son, Barry Sanders, Jr., a running back at Heritage Hall. Heritage Hall played last night against NOAH, a school from Tulsa, and it was Senior Night. During the first half while I was there, Barry Sanders, Jr. scored four touchdowns on runs of 73, 72, 62 and 31. He added one more TD in the second half and finished with 313 total yards. Deja Vu!

One of the fun things about my long career at The Oklahoman (33 years) is photographing the children of the people I’ve photographed over the years. In the 80′s it was Barry Sanders at OSU and now it’s Barry Sanders, Jr. at Heritage Hall. Who knows, maybe I’ll be around long enough to photograph his children!

Limited Practice
SeeWorth Academy is in class 3A, so they’ll play teams like Jones and Millwood this year. Ten days before their first game, only five players showed up to practice. Two more players came in late, but that means they were still four players short of the absolute minimum by the time practice ended. The team practices on a tiny field that reminded me of the field where I played baseball and football with my brother in rural Sapulpa. Receivers run their routes at full speed just a few feet away from a storage shed and an old trailer, and footballs that go over the fence are lost forever.

I thought the best approach to tell the visual side of the story was to just be there and document a practice. I kept an eye out for moments with the coaches and the players, but I also watched for how they related to the field and their environment. It was nice to spend an afternoon on a sports-related documentary assignment. Here’s a couple of pictures from the assignment, most of these weren’t used in the newspaper. To read all of Bob Przybylo’s story about SeeWorth Academy, click here.

Media Days
There’s plenty of behind-the-scenes work that’s done on Media Day at our local Division 1 colleges, and, of course, there’s plenty of waiting.

Tulsa World Photographer Mike Simons (left) and The Oklahoman photographer John Clanton, both UCO graduates, pose with OSU helmets that fit to varying degrees. Photo by Bryan Terry, The Oklahoman
On Sunday local media outlets converged at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Oklahoma State University to photograph fans getting autographs, press conferences, practices and portraits of players. At some point in the hour and a half wait for the players to arrive for the player availability part of the day, the media relations team brought in helmets that we could use for portraits (above). Staff Photographer Bryan Terry got portraits at OSU, while a few days before, Chris Landsberger photographed players at the University of Oklahoma. Meanwhile, I photographed practices and fan appreciation events at OSU and Steve Sisney photographed Fan Appreciation day in Norman. You can see photo galleries from both events by clicking here. The portraits will run in the August 29 newspaper, and we’ll talk about them on Alternate Crop as well.

Behind the Photo-Studio Photography
I mentioned yesterday that The Oklahoman Photography staff did well at this year’s Great Plains Journalism Awards. A contest that includes Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Missouri, Arkansas, North Dakota and Iowa. One of the categories that we don’t have in our local AP/ONE and SPJ contests is Studio Photography. Basically, the best picture taken in a Studio. This year, Our Director of Photography, Doug Hoke, was the Winner in this category. Here’s what he wrote about the winning photograph.

Tre Porter, of Carl Albert, for the cover of the high school football playoff special section themed, "Dark Horse" at OPUBCO studio Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. Photo by Doug Hoke, The Oklahoman
The sports department chose the theme of “Dark Horses” for it’s high school football playoff section. A different way of approaching the playoffs. When the writer contacted me about the assignment, he described the idea and said he had a model, one of the local stars, and the eye-black patches. I wanted to keep the photo simple and one that worked either in color or black and white, since we didn’t know where the photo was to appear in the section. I decided to use an 85mm lens wide open at f 1.8 to limit the depth-of-field to draw the focus to the words “dark horse.” So, although I shot in the studio where we have over 4,000 watts of strobe power available, I just used the 250 watt modeling light in one head with a 8” reflector and a grid above the camera, to concentrate the light on the player’s face. I kept the player well away from the background so that it would drop to black. I then moved in as tight as the lens would focus, keeping the framing horizontal to add power to the face and let the sides drop to black.
Chris Landsberger was named as a finalist in this category.
