In the last 12 days, the War in Afghanistan has affected families close to home, we’ve had swings in the weather between extreme heat and severe storms, OU and OSU started up the football season, students went back to school and grass fires started around the Oklahoma City Metro area.

16th Annual Day of Remembrance

It’s been sixteen years now since the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Every year, survivors, family members, friends, emergency responders and local residents mark the anniversary with a ceremony at the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. You can see more images from today’s ceremony by clicking here.

If you missed our coverage last year, take a look at two stories I photographed at the museum. One is about employees and volunteers cleaning the fence outside the memorial, the other is about the archives inside the museum.

If you’re new to Alternate Crop, or if you haven’t checked in for awhile, this installment of ‘Pictures I Like’ is a good look at the work we’ve been busy with in March. We’ve photographed grass fires in the state, seen a change in the weather and covered the end of high school basketball season. We’ve also gotten nice pictures from the Timed Event Championship, The Big 12 Basketball Tournament and troops returning home from service overseas.

State of the State

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin delivered her first State of the State address at the Oklahoma State Capitol today in Oklahoma City. I got to the Capitol too early and decided to look for pictures that readers couldn’t have seen if they haven’t been to the Capitol. There’s a portrait (above) at the entrance to the House Chamber. It hangs in a room that is carefully guarded while the House is in session. I photographed State Senator Judy Eason McIntyre’s office and her Barack Obama items. I’ve strung this out too long. I think that by Jan. 12, 2011, we should be looking at pictures from this year and not looking backwards. So this is it. We’re always busy in the fall with high school and college football, RedHawks baseball, feature stories and the usual newspaper assignments. We produced slideshows about Route 66 Bowl, Moore High School football Head Coach Scott Myers, and Kody Turner, a high school football player who died after football practice in September. Sarah Phipps worked on a story about Oklahoma City Firefighter Kent Collins, that was published in October, and there’s a nice slideshow about the 2010 Bedlam football game.

Our interns, Miranda Grubbs and Mitch Alcala left us at the end of July. We wrote about their pictures, and we had some other interesting posts toward the end of 2010. Holiday stories

My favorite pictures never simply show that an event happened or that a building exists. The most meaningful pictures show how an event felt. Often it’s the subtle moments that have the most meaning. A hug, a kiss, a pat on the back, a head bowed in prayer. The moments that we all relate to are the ones that connect the reader to the image and tell the story.

Staff photographers at The Oklahoman did a good job telling some important stories this holiday season by looking out for those important moments. You can read more about Angela Biggers and her family, watch a video about Christie King and her daughter or read about soldiers from Ft. Sill going home for the holidays.

Here’s a look at some of the OU and OSU football photos from the history of Bedlam. We’ve made a photo gallery with these shots and more pictures of Bedlam football history here. We hope these will help to get you in the mood for Saturday’s big game.

"The University of Oklahoma-Oklahoma A&M game was complete in every respect when the inevitable dog got in the picture. The eyes of the some 30,000 Stillwater spectators, however, were on Jack Mitchell, Sooner quarterback, about to cross the double stripe. Mitchell took the ball on the Aggie 14, cut around end on the optional play and headed for the corner for the score. Oklahoma won the bell-clapper battle, 19-15." Marathon Day

I enjoy photographing the finish line at a marathon. There’s so much emotion, exhaustion, relief all at once. So many stories. Some runners celebrate when they get to the end, others cry or get a hug from a family member, some just turn off their stopwatch and keep moving. I want to chase down every person that reacts as they cross the finish line. Ask them where they’re from, what makes them run, why they’re so excited. But right then, another couple crosses the line, holding hands and smiling. I forget the last runners and wonder about them instead.

The Oklahoman Photography Department did well at the Associated Press Oklahoma News Executives annual awards. The awards were announced during a banquet in Tulsa last Saturday night.

As a group, we collected 17 of the possible 25 awards, including 5 first place awards out of the 6 categories. Sarah Phipps won three of those five first place awards.
