Pictures I like

Looking through our archives at the pictures The Oklahoman staff photographers have turned in over the past 7 days, I realized that a few of my favorites were a good representation of the assignments we see in an average week. Sports, everything from high school to professional, features, news and a more in-depth feature.

March of 1,000 Flaming Skeletons

During the fall I spend most Saturdays at a football stadium. Last Saturday, however, I spent the evening covering the March of 1,000 Flaming Skeletons at the Ghouls Gone Wild Halloween Parade in downtown Oklahoma City.  I interviewed Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and put together an audio slideshow with some pictures from the parade.

To see the slideshow click here

Here are a few photos from the slideshow.

Carnival workers at the Oklahoma State Fair

Every year that I cover the Oklahoma State Fair, the carnival workers want me to take their photograph.  This year I decided to do just that.  I interviewed some of the workers and put together an audio slideshow with the pictures from the fair.

To see it click here.

Here are a few photos from the slideshow.

Bryan Terry photographed the UFC Fight Night, a mixed martial arts event, in Oklahoma City on Wednesday. I think fights in general can be pretty tough to photograph. I imagine a fence between the photographers and the participants doesn’t make it any easier (although the fence does add to the ambiance of some pictures, I think).  Below are some of the shots Bryan took.

If you’d like to see a gallery of even more pics from UFC Fight Night, click here.

Football time in Oklahoma

This week marks the official launch of football season in Oklahoma. Last week we had a warm-up with a couple of real games that we covered, courtesy of Langston University and Casady School. However, this week things are full speed ahead with a full slate of high school games and OU and OSU beginning their seasons.  We’ll have updates from the college openers later this weekend and some more high school photos in our galleries too.

Here’s some photos shot during the games last night and another I liked from Casady’s first game last week. To see a gallery of more of our photos from last night, click here.

“It’s pretty wild.”

Staff Photographer Bryan Terry attended the Oklahoma State Prison Rodeo in McAlester on Friday night. He photographed the event for the newspaper, but also produced this video for the website.

The rodeo didn’t get going until 8:30pm. That’s a fairly late start when editors start worrying about art for the paper by about 9pm. Bryan had to take pictures quickly, send them back to the office by 9pm and then continue working on the video.

Bryan Terry went yesterday to the weigh-in of the Okie Noodling Tournament, where people catch flathead catfish with only their bare hands, in Pauls Valley, Okla. Men with bloody knuckles heaving flatheads can make for some images you don’t see every day. Bryan said the event was saturated with professional photographers and video crews. No doubt some of this popularity is due to the “Okie Noodling” series of documentaries about this unique tournament. Here’s some pictures from the weigh-in.

Fourth of July wrap-up

The photographers of The Oklahoman were out in force to cover Independence Day. The weather shifted from nice to muggy and then rain in the evening. I’m glad we got the rain, but just wish it had happened either the day before or the day after. The RedHawks didn’t play their baseball game, but did have fireworks. Other fireworks shows were postponed. Here are some of the photos from the day.

And Bryan Terry did a cool time-lapse video from the LibertyFest parade that we highlighted in this blog entry.

LibertyFest Parade

Bryan Terry shot a time lapse video of the LibertyFest Parade in downtown Edmond. There are 1754 still frames in the video condensing the two-hour parade into two-and-a-half minutes.

Paul Hellstern was covering the parade from the ground. You can see a gallery of his photos here.
