Oklahoma earthquakes

Tina Hackbarth hugs her daughter, Mercedes Oslin, 17, when Oslin began crying as she walked through the damage in her grandparents' dining room. An eathquake late Saturday night caused extensive damage to the two-story ranch-style home of Joseph and Mary Reneau near the community of Sparks in Lincoln County. Many of their belongings were damaged earlier Saturday when another earthquake struck the same area. Hackbarth is the Reneaus' daughter. Photo by Jim Beckel, The Oklahoman
Most of you have probably heard about the recent earthquakes in Oklahoma (or just felt them). We don’t have much experience covering earthquakes in this state, especially since most of the ones we have had caused very little damage that is visual. Jim Beckel’s search for visuals on Saturday to illustrate an early-morning earthquake led him to a couple who would suffer damage from earthquakes twice in two days.
While trying to get a visual angle after the tremor early Saturday morning, Beckel found some researchers with the OU School of Geology and Geophysics placing instruments in the ground in Lincoln County near the epicenter. The researchers led him to Mary and Joseph Reneau, who had some of their china and keepsakes broken in Saturday morning’s earthquake of 4.7 magnitude. Jim didn’t expect to be back at the Reneau’s home the next day, but that’s what happened after a magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred Saturday night. This time there was extensive damage to the Reneau’s home.
To see more photos from the Reneau’s home and other damage in the state , click here.

The pair are accompanied by Austin Holland, left, a research seismologist with the Oklahoma Geological Survey. They are placing the devices on the Reneau property after an earthquake rattled the area in the area in the early morning hours Saturday. The Reneaus were awakened around 2:15 a.m. when their house shook and items began falling off the walls and from shelves and cabinets inside their two-story brick ranch-style home in rural Lincoln County, about six miles northwest of Prague. Holland placed the quake's epicenter within two to three miles of the Reneau home. Photo by Jim Beckel, The Oklahoman

Waiting at OSU vs. Tulsa

Chris Landsberger, Sarah Phipps and I have been shooting weather pictures in Tulsa for the last three hours while waiting for the skies to clear so that Oklahoma State can play a football game against Tulsa. The scheduled 9pm start was already the latest college football game kickoff that I’d been a part of. If we get this going, it’ll be after midnight. More as it develops…

High School Football in the light

Those of us who cover sports at The Oklahoman love high school football. We have one major complaint about it, however; most games are played after the sun sets in very dark stadiums. But at the beginning of the season, when the days are longer and the time has yet to change, we get to shoot with natural light at the most beautiful time of day.
Here’s a batch of high school football photos shot while the light is still shining in the evening and one photo from this weekend’s annual Soul Bowl between Millwood and Douglass, which is played in the afternoon.
To see a gallery of Friday’s high school football games, click here. Why not check out the Soul Bowl gallery too while you’re at it?

We’ve been photographing the Women’s College World Series softball championship here at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City for the past several days. The good news is that both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State made the tournament this year. The bad news is that OU and OSU were both eliminated on Saturday after only two games each.
Here are some of The Oklahoman’s photographs from the tournament so far. If you’d like to see photo galleries from the games, you can check out our photo gallery page.

Remember the 10

Ten years ago today, 10 men with the Oklahoma State basketball program died in a plane crash while returning from a game against Colorado. OSU honored those who died with a ceremony retiring the No. 10 during halftime of last night’s basketball game against Texas. Here of some photos Sarah Phipps took at the game.

Star Wars Day at Lloyd Noble

R2-D2 sits by the court as the teams warm up before the men's college basketball game between the University of Colorado and the University of Oklahoma at Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla., Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011. This R2-D2 was built and controlled by Chris Campbell of DeWitt, Ark., with the 501st Legion, a group of Star Wars costume enthusiasts. Photo by Nate Billings, The Oklahoman
It was an exciting afternoon at Lloyd Noble Center last Saturday. First, the OU men’s basketball team won a conference game, defeating Colorado 67-60. And almost better than a win from the Sooners, it was Star Wars Day at the game. I must admit, as a lifelong lover of the Star Wars films (and to be clear, I’m just talking about the original three. I don’t have enough space to get into my complex feeling about the prequels), I thought this was a very cool idea for a promotion.
Members of the 501st Legion, a national group of costumed Star Wars fans, walked around the concourse posing for photos and entertained fans on the court during time-outs and at the half. The costumes from the 501st were really remarkable and looked as if the characters stepped right off the big screen. Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca, was at the game too, signing autographs for fans after the win.
The only member of the Rebellion in attendance was an R2-D2 built and controlled by Chris Campbell of DeWitt, Ark. Campbell told me he had worked over the last two-and-a-half years to build his remote controlled R2-D2. It was impressive.

A look back at Bedlam football
Here’s a look at some of the OU and OSU football photos from the history of Bedlam. We’ve made a photo gallery with these shots and more pictures of Bedlam football history here. We hope these will help to get you in the mood for Saturday’s big game.

"The University of Oklahoma-Oklahoma A&M game was complete in every respect when the inevitable dog got in the picture. The eyes of the some 30,000 Stillwater spectators, however, were on Jack Mitchell, Sooner quarterback, about to cross the double stripe.
