A look back at Bedlam football
Here’s a look at some of the OU and OSU football photos from the history of Bedlam. We’ve made a photo gallery with these shots and more pictures of Bedlam football history here. We hope these will help to get you in the mood for Saturday’s big game.

"The University of Oklahoma-Oklahoma A&M game was complete in every respect when the inevitable dog got in the picture. The eyes of the some 30,000 Stillwater spectators, however, were on Jack Mitchell, Sooner quarterback, about to cross the double stripe. Mitchell took the ball on the Aggie 14, cut around end on the optional play and headed for the corner for the score. Oklahoma won the bell-clapper battle, 19-15." ‘Check your self!!’
There’s a new sign in the catwalk at the OKC Arena. Printed on a piece of typing paper, it reads ‘It is 96 feet from here to the floor. If you drop something it is probably going to kill somebody. Check your self!!’ I like the new sign. Good advice and a good place to end our recent hiatus on Alternate Crop. Here’s a few Thunder basketball pictures that you didn’t see in the newspaper.

Photographers from The Oklahoman use eight strobes, mounted in the catwalks of the OKC Arena, to light up the action on the court. A receiver is mounted to the lights, and we have transmitters mounted on the cameras we use sitting behind the baseline on the court. I usually use one camera with the lights and one without. Here’s what a difference that burst of light makes to the camera settings. I took the picture above at 400 ISO, f. 4.5 at 1/250th of a second. Sarah Phipps took the picture below with a 300mm lens, ISO 3200, f. 2.8 at 1/1600th of a second. We post photo galleries of the Thunder games with all the images we’ve turned in after each game. You can see those galleries and more by clicking here.

Taking another look

A boat for sale along Highway 74 north of Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010. Photo by John Clanton, The Oklahoman
I spend a lot of time looking at photography magazines, websites and books. National Geographic, one of my favorites, regularly delivers beautiful images of exotic places around the world to my home in Oklahoma City. Photographs from Azerbaijan, Egypt, the Sea of Japan, Central America and other places that I’ll probably never see are beautiful and awe-inspiring. I can see why people are inspired to travel after seeing those images, but I take a different inspiration away from National Geographic and websites like VII Photo Agency and Magnum. Instead of yearning to get away to see beauty, I try to look at my local world through fresh eyes.
After working at five newspapers, all in Oklahoma, I’ve been all over the state. I’ve traveled Highway 33 to Highway 74 from Kingfisher to Oklahoma City probably a hundred times. On the way back from a sports assignment on Tuesday afternoon, I slowed down a bit, pulled on to side streets and challenged myself to see the exotic side of a small part of my home state that I’m used to speeding by at 65 mph.

Daylight savings is over, so the light starts to look pretty as early as 4:30 pm. I watched dust on country roads swirl in the wind and looked at open pastures under a nearly cloudless, blue sky. Extraordinary images depending on where you live; or maybe you just need to slow down and take another look at your world. That landlocked boat is going for $300, by the way.

For the Love of Cars

A 1952 Porsche 356 Cabriolet owned by Dr. Robert Wilson is the oldest surviving Porsche sold in America according to Porsche. It was rescued from a salvage yard and restored. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010. Photo by Doug Hoke, The Oklahoman.
Make no mistake, being a photographer for a newspaper is a great job, but most of the time we take photos for stories that, while interesting and challenging, are not by choice. Oct. 27 was different. There was an assignment I wanted to do. I mean REALLY wanted to do. The oldest Porsche sold in America, a 1952 Porsche Cabriolet.
As a life-long car enthusiast, there are few things I would rather do than photograph cars or talk about cars. I got the bug from my Dad. During my middle and high school years he bought, worked on and traded sports cars and I went along for the ride. At one point Dad had a yellow 1956 Porsche 356a with a sunroof, so that piqued my interest in Dr. Robert Wilson’s Porsche.
I love to explore the lines of the older cars that were built when the designers ruled, not the accountants and marketing teams. And this 356 is a jewel. Learning about the history of the car was exciting. To learn more, watch the video.
Hope you enjoy looking at the photos as much as I did taking them. To see a gallery click here

Celebrating birthdays
Emerson High School is Oklahoma City Public Schools’ alternative high school. For most students, it’s a last attempt to stay in school and get an education. One of the programs on campus, The Teen Outreach Program or TOP, helps teen mothers. For TOP students in Randa Pirrong’s career orientation class, birthdays are a special event. Volunteers from St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, bring food and cake to the school every month to help the students celebrate their birthdays. Pirrong says that for some of the students, who now have children of their own, this is the first birthday party they’ve ever had.
