[...] Last Sunday I wrote about the activists who staged a campaign outside the Chase Tower in Oklahoma City. Their hope was to convince Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn to lift his hold on Senate Bill 1067. After camping outside the building for 11 days, the group got word on Tuesday that Coburn had lifted his hold. Activists changed their signs to read “Dr. Coburn just said yes,” and celebrated outside the building where Se. Coburn has offices in Oklahoma City.
To Bob B., there was an offset written into the orginal bill that was presented to the Senate but it was taken out.

Also Senator Coburn has voted for bills to pass in the senate that had no offsets in it including $7.5 "B"illion (not "M"illion) for development efforts in Pakistan a couple of months ago and, as C. Mayhue commented on, $39 million to study Salt Cedar and Russian Olive trees.

He can allow $39 million to study trees but not $40 million to help a country that has been in torn apart by Joseph Kony and his KIDNAPPED CHIlD soldiers for the past 23 years????

Also there will be no additional money allocated for this program. The money will come from the State Department’s existing foreign aid budget.

Perhaps you should read up on the situation to fully understand it and know what is going on before commenting.

Bob B. I wish you knew what you are talking about. But by your statement, I don't believe you do.

If the United States was $12 trillion in debt, why did Coburn decide to fund a multi-million dollar research program for olive trees as well as a bunch of other useless bills? We are going to fund programs whether we're in debt or not- so why not fund programs that will actually have a lasting affect on a place that is desperate for help?

Good to see young people taking an interest in the world, but the U.S. has a $12 trillion debt which means we don't have the money to pay for this bill regardless of its good intentions. I wish the activists the best with their cause but I applaud Tom Coburn for blocking this bill until it is paid for by cutting some other government program.
