Where the Buffalo roam
Last week, Staff Photographer David McDaniel travelled to Pawhuska to photograph the Buffalo Roundup on the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve. In addition to getting still images for the newspaper, David produced this video for NewsOK.com.

I was stunned to read that some of the buffalo are sold for “commercial hunts.” These are better known as canned hunts and there is nothing sporting about them. Remember when all the jokes were made about Dick Cheney shooting pheasants in a pen and calling it hunting? This is the equivalent for these buffalo. They are sold to “game ranches” and are hunted and shot within a fenced enclosure. The so called hunters are guaranteed a kill. What a pitiful end for one of our national treasures. If the herds were managed with more modern contraception methods, these culls would not be necessary. But of course contraception is a dirty word in red state Oklahoma, no matter who it’s applied to so it’s doubtful that more humane methods of population control will ever be implemented for these majestic animals.
