All of these responses to a legitimate question are total bs. It isn't "hard" to switch stylists...you just don't return. Business is business. Would you call switching mechanics, lawyers, doctors.."hard?" If so, you have serious codependency issues. You have paid a stylist money to do a service. Did he/she call you to see if you're satisfied? If you're not satisfied, move on...they'll get the message. A "parting gift?" Really??

Hi, Helen,
I feel as though I almost know you personally since I am a longtime reader of your columns and also because our daughter, Melissa Howell speaks of you so fondly.

I want to thank you for reporting on the Theta's Flaming Festival. It brought back memories from the past when I (a Pi Phi) was flattered to be invited to do a table at the first Flaming Festival event in Wichita. It was probably in the early sixties and each decorator was to do a holiday table. My assignment was a Valentine theme. It was very pink, with Victorian laces, etc. and I attempted to make it romantic, but I'm not at all sure of the results in that department.

I recall that we were required to include a menu for each specific dinner. I think I did quail something with a wonderful wine and a sexy chocolate dessert.

About that time I also decorated a fall arrangement for an event honoring Helen Corbitt on the release of her latest cook book. She was well known as the chef at the Neiman Marcus Tea Room in Dallas and Green Door(spa)fame. She was also a cohort of James Beard.

I went to our farm and collected big fat yellow-green hedge apples, some brilliantly colored leaves, huge acorns, and some bright orange persimmons. I also added pieces of lichen-covered wood. This statement of color and texture was arranged with an large antique pewter lantern.

Ms Corbitt was to select the winning entry and I was thrilled when she awarded my vinette that honor. I still have the yellowed newspaper clipping showing her admiring my entry. Needless to say I bought not only her newest cook book, but all four of her books, which she graciously signed.

I hadn't thought of those days in years. Thanks to your column's piquing my memory, I was transported back to another time and fond recollections.

                   My best,

                       Patty Mercer

I agree with Ms. Blaney. Your evening bag does not belong on the table or the floor. In fact, nothing belongs on the dining table except those items intended for dining and atmosphere, such as linens, china, silver, crystal, candles, etc. It is considered rude to place keys, wallets, notepads, lipstick, evening bags and other items on the table. And, as people walk on floors and there's no telling what is on the bottom of their shoes, you don't want to place your evening bag there. These guidelines have nothing to do with one's age; they are simply appropriate and in observing them you will prove to be pleasant company and appear to others to be savvy, polished and sophisticated.

I am attending an out of state 7 pm wedding at a fancy hotel. The invitation does not say black tie or formal. Is it okay to wesr a long navy dress with jacket in Tulsa at the Mayo hotel. Or should it be a shorter cocktail dress. All I have heard is some guests are wearing black and the bridesmaids are wearing blue with lots of sparkles.
