Kappa Alpha Thetas in Oklahoma City have Flaming Festival

The 56th annual Kappa Alpha Theta Alumni Flaming Festival was held last week at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. Twenty four tables were decorated by Theta members, friends of Thetas and there were some commercial tables. Karma Robinson was chairman.

Louise Bayless Parsley, Houston, Tx., book author and newspaper columnist, was the luncheon guest speaker. The group also featured the Pansy Pantry, homemade baked items for take home.The event benefitted Youth Services of Oklahoma County, the SKIL program, and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

Gov. Mary Fallin, Millie Hightower and Macie Craven- Liles talked to everyone at the Flaming Festival.

The 55^th annual Kappa Alpha Theta Flaming Festival was held Nov. 2 at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. Beautifully decorated tables filled the Great Hall. They were created by Kappa Alpha Theta alumni and area merchants. One of the tables was “An Evening in the Oklahoma Governor’s Mansion” by Gov. Mary Fallin (she is a Theta) and Wade Christensen.

Among the others were “Kentucky Derby” by Karen Hanstein, LeAnn Lienhard and Susan Peck, “Hunter’s Brunch” by Lynn Douglas Coury and Carol Coury Hefner, “Dia de Los Muertos” by Addison Triska and Tallie Triska and “Join Us For High Tea” by Kristen Bohanon, Sarah Geiger and Dana Thomas. Among the 16 commercial tables were 42^nd Street Candy Co., Trochta’s Flowers, Cayman’s, Ruth Meyers and Casey’s.

Millie Hightower and Macie Cravens-Liles were chairman of the event and on the board were Emily Blake, Natalie Boggs, Martha Bradshaw, Julie Branch, Cathy Cesar, Diana Codispoti, Cadee Coulter, Nicole Dobbins, Michelle Ellis, Lisa Franklin, Karen Hanstein, Teri Hubbard, Becky Johnston, Kim Joseph, Susie Kemp, LeAnn Lienhard, Adelaide Liedtke, Penny McCaleb, Amy Parrish, Sally Royse, Jean Lea Spitz, Betty Lou Stewart, Kay Lynn Sturm, Sue Timberlake, Marsha Waldo and Betsy White.

The Flaming Festival was open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and there was a luncheon speaker. Mary Carol Garrity, founder of Nell Hill’s, an interior design store. Her lovely stores are in Atchison, Ks., and Kansas City, Ks. She has also written home interior books and is a syndicated columnist. She brought the lantern tabletop centerpieces for the luncheon and proceeds from the sale of them were given to the Thetas who benefited the SKIL (Supporting Kids in Independent Living) program at Youth Services for Oklahoma County and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Oklahoma County.

Garrity and Teri Hubbard had a conversation about tabletop designs, Garrity’s life, and her famous stores which are named for her early pioneer grandmother.

The festive tea table during the event was filled with homemade cookies and the centerpiece was a wooden house decorated with china and greenery. Past presidents of Theta poured tea. There was also homemade cakes, cookies, cinammon rolls and candies tied with black and gold ribbons for guests to purchase.

Kappa Alpha Theta alum ( at Vanderbilt University) Amy Grant entertained at lunch at the Theta Flaming Festival at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. She sang some new songs and old favorites to the 400- plus crowd.

She was gracious in her remarks in acknowledging the 50-year-Thetas and also in helping promote the purchase of the centerpieces which also included an Amy Grant Christmas compact disc. She talked about her family members including her mother-in-law and sister-in-law who were in the audience.

It was the 53^rd annual Flaming Festival and there were 35 festively -decorated and themed tables by Theta alumnae and area merchants. Themes ranged from “Birthday Party for our Granddaughters” by Cathy Cross, Ann Fleming and Janie Cook to “Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom Luncheon” by Barb Munneke and Cherry Kay Clifford.

Home-baked cookies were served at a table with former past alumni presidents pouring the tea and coffee. (This lovely tea table is traditional ). The Thetas also had a major bake sale with such items as cakes, cookies and fudge sauce and barbecue sauce for sale.

Co-chairmen of the 2009 Flaming Festival were Susie Kemp and Johnna Schick. President of the local Theta alumnae chapter is Kim Joseph.

Proceeds go to Food 4 Kids and CASA of Oklahoma County.
