Hi, Helen,
I feel as though I almost know you personally since I am a longtime reader of your columns and also because our daughter, Melissa Howell speaks of you so fondly.

I want to thank you for reporting on the Theta's Flaming Festival. It brought back memories from the past when I (a Pi Phi) was flattered to be invited to do a table at the first Flaming Festival event in Wichita. It was probably in the early sixties and each decorator was to do a holiday table. My assignment was a Valentine theme. It was very pink, with Victorian laces, etc. and I attempted to make it romantic, but I'm not at all sure of the results in that department.

I recall that we were required to include a menu for each specific dinner. I think I did quail something with a wonderful wine and a sexy chocolate dessert.

About that time I also decorated a fall arrangement for an event honoring Helen Corbitt on the release of her latest cook book. She was well known as the chef at the Neiman Marcus Tea Room in Dallas and Green Door(spa)fame. She was also a cohort of James Beard.

I went to our farm and collected big fat yellow-green hedge apples, some brilliantly colored leaves, huge acorns, and some bright orange persimmons. I also added pieces of lichen-covered wood. This statement of color and texture was arranged with an large antique pewter lantern.

Ms Corbitt was to select the winning entry and I was thrilled when she awarded my vinette that honor. I still have the yellowed newspaper clipping showing her admiring my entry. Needless to say I bought not only her newest cook book, but all four of her books, which she graciously signed.

I hadn't thought of those days in years. Thanks to your column's piquing my memory, I was transported back to another time and fond recollections.

                   My best,
