20-40-60 Etiquette question and answers

IMG_09963

Parties Extra!… 20-40-60 Question…from a conversation with a friend.

YOU ASK…WE ANSWER…YOU DECIDE

QUESTION: What are your cell phone pet peeves?

Callie’s Answer: I HATE it when a number I don’t know calls me and doesn’t leave a message! I am always tempted to call it back but I think not leaving a voice mail is rude! YOU called ME!

Also, I don’t like it when you text someone and they call you. I texted you because I couldn’t call you! Another one I can’t stand is when individuals abbreviate their text messages. COME ON! Phone etiquette!

Lillie-Beth’s Answer: Those who feel they need to answer the cell phone the second it rings or receives a text, even when they’re in mid-conversation with you. It’s very disruptive.

…Having a private conversation over the cell phone via text In front of others. If it’s that urgent, excuse yourself and tell them why. If the urgent phone call happens to me (the urgency is usually child-related), when I return, I usually explain and apologize profusely.

…Overhearing intimate details of a strangers’ lives while they’re talking loudly on their cell phones in public places.

…Conversations through the checkout counter and out the other end, especially when it slows down attempts to empty a shopping cart for the cashier.

…Dropped calls that leave you and your conversation hang…

I offer these with apologies and with the full realization that I, too, am occasionally guilty of letting the cell phone invade time with actual people. The cell phone can quickly become a lifeline to another world, healthy or not.

And here’s a question for our readers: Have you ever been on the phone in your parked car outside some place only to have a friend walk up? Did you interrupt the phone call to visit with the person or do you wave your friend off until you’re finished?  How did you handle it? What if it were a serious conversation?

Helen’s Answer: I am most annoyed when someone in the car ahead of me on the road is talking away and not paying attention to driving. If they miss a green light or they are weaving all over the road while talking, it is troublesome to all drivers.

My other pet peeve is when the catchy tune of the cell phone ring interrupts lunch or dinner, a meeting or a conversation with a friend. Set the phone to vibration.

Hilarie H. Blaney, Etiquette and International Protocol Consultant’s, Answer: 1.  Cell phones ringing in a funeral or wedding.  “On December 30th I attended a funeral and stood to recite a prayer just as a cell phone rang.  When attending the funeral of my former boss Senator Bellmon, a cell phone rang.  Amazing.”

2.  Listening to people in the doctor’s office, elevator and heaven forbid, the bathroom.

3.  Not listening to a voice mail, but calling the person to say “you called?”  That makes someone repeat a detailed message they have already left for you.
