BABY JAMES HONORED

Jennie Lewis and her two-month-old son, James Lewis. Jennie, the baby, and husband Ryan, were visiting from Colo. Baby James slept throughout the party.
Two-month-old James Lewis from Avon, Colorado, and his parents, Jennie and Ryan Lewis, visited grandparents, Bette and Jim MacKellar.
Jennie and Bette entertained at a Sip and See party so friends could meet the baby.
Cupcakes, brownies, cheese torts, tea sandwiches and a fruit tray were menu items. The napkins said, “Introducing James.”

OKLAHOMA FOUNDATION FOR EXCELLENCE

Five outstanding Oklahoma educators were honored along with 100 of the state’s top public high school seniors when the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence hosted its 23rd annual Academic Awards Banquet at the new Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Norman.
John C. Danforth, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and a former U.S. senator from Missouri, delivered the banquet’s keynote address titled “Being Admirable.”
David L. Boren, founder and chairman of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, was master of ceremony. The gala event, which was attended by nearly 1,000 people, featured musical entertainment by the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute Orchestra.
The foundation awarded its prestigious $5,000 Oklahoma Medal for Excellence in Teaching Awards to elementary honoree Georgie Chapuis, Sadler Arts Academy, Muskogee; secondary award-winner Claudia Swisher, Norman North High School, Norman; regional university/community college winner Topan K. Bhattacharya, professor of finance, Cameron University, Lawton; and research university recipient Andrew Arena Jr., professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. The Oklahoma Medal for Excellence in elementary/secondary administration was presented to Barbara Gabel, fine arts coordinator for Putnam City Public Schools, Oklahoma City.
The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence presented merit-based Academic All-State Scholarships of $1,000 each and bronze medallions to 100 Academic All-State Scholars. The 2009 All-State class hails from 82 different schools in 71 Oklahoma school districts.

Longtime Oklahoma City community leader Mary Nichols is seated with Adita Jalla, an Academic All-Stater from Putnam City North High School. Also pictured are Nichols’ grandsons, Jeff (left) and Randy Street. Nichols sponsored Jalla’s Academic All-State Scholarship, which was presented at the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Academic Awards Banquet.

CONGRATULATIONS COLE

A graduation celebration honored Dr. Cole Wayne Wootton who graduated Sunday from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Family and friends met following the graduation ceremonies.
The party was at the David L. Boren Student Union, OU Health Sciences Center.
A Mexican buffet was served as well as a large cake saying “Congratulations Cole Wootton, M.D.”
Cole and his wife Patsy are moving to Lexington, Ky., for his intern and residency program in urology at the University of Kentucky.

THE ASSOCIATION OF JUNIOR LEAGUES INTERNATIONAL

Karla Wallace
Karla McCasland Wallace, Junior League of Oklahoma City member and former president was elected to the board of directors of The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), the 108-year-old women’s community leadership organization.
The election was held during the Association’s Annual Conference in Atlanta in April. She will serve as Area V Director from 2009-2012.
Wallace joined the Junior League in 1994. She held the offices of president, nominating chairman, fundraising vice -president, training chairman, Mistletoe Market treasurer and financial development chairman.
As a member of AJLI board of directors, Wallace’s key responsibilities are to govern the Association and to provide leadership that inspires the 293 Junior Leagues in four countries to achieve the AJLI Mission.
