THE GAYLORD PRIZE

450 people including  University of Oklahoma students, journalism faculty members and local media professionals and guests were at the Inaugural Gaylord Prize Luncheon honoring Jim Lehrer, Executive Editor and Anchor of the “NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.”

Lehrer is also a novelist and playwright, setting one of his books with locations at the Oklahoma State Capitol and the Skirvin Hotel.

He has been moderator for the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates for the past six elections.

Both a morning reception and the luncheon  were at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel. In Lehrer’s remarks he noted that “journalism is still about the story.”

“In the beginning, there is always a news story,” he added. He discussed the fact that it takes the news reporter to bring news to the attention of the blogger, the talk show host, the video people and the comedians.

“The spirit of journalism lives deep in you people,” he told the crowd. “I am proud to be a Gaylord Prize winner.”

Luncheon hosts were  University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren, OU Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication Dean Joe Foote and the GCJMC Board of Visitors.  Board of Visitors chairman Pattye Moore welcomed the guests.

The $25,000. prize was established by the University of Oklahoma Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication.  Funding was from the Edward L. Gaylord family.

The Gaylord Prize is a new tradition which will be awarded annually to a nationally recognized journalism and mass communication professional.

At  the event were Christy and Jim Everest, Louise and Clay Bennett, Tricia Everest, Mary FitzSimons, Christy Bennett and  Mollie Bennett.

Others  attending were Molly Shi Boren, Carole and Ed Kelley, David Thompson, Joanne Orr, Lil and Bill Ross,Howard Price, Steve Trolinger,  Lt. Gov. Jari Askins, Paul Massad, David Dary, Marti and Joe Ferretti, Jose Freede, Bob Ross, Renzi Stone, Clark and Kay Musser and Rob Boswell, Leslie Cermak, Catherine Bishop, Joe Hight, Sue Hale,  Lillie-Beth Brinkman, Carol Troy, Jason Balis, Coutney Corelle, Alyssa Combs, Adam Croom and Joanne Orr.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS

Longtime food editor at The Oklahoman who just retired, Sharon Dowell,  was luncheon honoree    at Nonna’s in Bricktown. Hostesses were Avis Scaramucci and Sherrel Jones. The group celebrated her 25 years in the food business.

Lunch was included a first course salad  and soup; choice of chicken enchiladas or chicken, tuna and fruit salad or tilapia and mini cream pies for dessert.

The group spent the afternoon talking about food memories.  Five of them stayed until 4:30, just talking about food. They agreed  to make the gathering an annual event.

A 70th birthday party honored Bill Majors recently.

Hosts were family members Audrey and Keith Seeliger,  Dodge Nichols, Carey Sue and Ricardo Vega and Billy Vega in the Vega home.

A  crystal bowl was arranged with arranged roses, freesia, berries, hydrangeas, carnations and a candle. The cake was shaped like a cigar with Bill and wife Rosalie’s cattle brand on the cigar band. Guests included Maya, Michael, Sydney and Mike Crothers, Joli, Jenna, Josie and John Crothers, Cindy Yost and Dona Thralls.

In lieu of gifts,  guests made donations to their local FFA chapters.

FLAMING FESTIVAL

The preview party for the Kappa Alpha Theta Alumni’s annual Flaming Festival was a huge success. Not only were the 40 plus tables set up, but the group served dinner and announced the 2008 Theta of the Year, Lee Ann Nordin.  

She has been Theta alumni president, OU Corporation board president and Junior League president.

The event was Nov. 11th at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club.

The  next day beginning at 10 a.m. the fun tables were shown again.  There was also a luncheon and speaker, Charles Faudree. Homemade cookies were served at the tea table and gourmet baked items and appetizers  were sold at the Pansy Pantry.

Proceeds from the Festival benefit CASA, the “Food 4 Kids” program and Theta programs. Co-chairmen of the Festival were Ranell Brown and Betsy White.

University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University Thetas were involved with the party as well as Thetas living in Oklahoma City from other chapters.

DR. CLAY’S 90TH BIRTHDAY

The party: A 90th birthday party for Dr. Dick Clay given by Barbara and Bud Beeler and Marty and Cliff Conkle in the Beeler home.
The theme: Halloween with “vampire bites” and unearthly delights” as well as “hexing grog.” The “witching hour” was 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.
Sweet treats: Chocolate eyeballs for party favors and lots of Halloween candy in every room. Flowers were everywhere too. Roses, tulips, orchids, artichokes and berries were arranged on the buffet table.
The birthday factor: The honoree received lots of cards and a memory book from his children and grandchildren.

Parties Extra – Kappa Alpha Theta, Flaming Festival.

THE TABLES ARE READY

The 52nd annual Flaming Festival is set for November 12 at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. There will be 40 decorated tables set up by Kappa Alpha Theta Alumni members and area merchants.

There is also a luncheon and Charles Faudree will be guest speaker. Proceeds benefit CASA and the Food 4 Kids program.  Ranell Brown and Betsy White are co-chairmen.

Who: One-month-old Cole David Kramedjian, son of Della and Chris  Kramedjian.
The hostesses: Janet Prebel and Pat Richardson in the Prebel home in Norman.
Just ducky: Yellow baby ducks were everywhere. They floated in the silver punch bowl. They sat on the mantel and at the entryway, along with vases of white roses.  They sat on the dessert plates and they were on the party invitation.
The honoree:
Baby Cole was the perfect guest. People held him throughout the party and he did not cry once.

Elegant entertaining:  A lovely cocktail party honored Dr. Stephen Gauthier who is in plastic surgery practice with Dr. Mike Kelly, Dr. Ed Dalton and Dr. Paul Silverstein in Oklahoma City. Hosts, Lu and Bill Beard and Rebel Robertson and Scott Salmon, invited friends to meet him.
The glitz: Two buffet tables were set with large silver and crystal epergnes filled with candles and white roses, lilies and orchids.
