GOVERNOR’S ARTS AWARDS

The State Capitol’s fourth floor rotunda was filled with people as the 32nd annual Governor’s Arts Awards were presented. The awards were given to 16 people and four businesses for exceptional work in the arts. A reception for the honorees was held on the first floor .
Oklahoma Arts Council chairman Jim Tolbert was director of ceremonies and Gov. Brad Henry presented the awards. Interim Executive Director of the Oklahoma Arts Council Suzanne Tate gave remarks before the presentation.
Award winners were Christy Everest and Nancy Meinig, Governor’s Arts Awards: Betty Price, Liddy Doenges Leadership in the Arts Award; Chesapeake Energy, Ideal Homes, Willis Granite Products, the Earl Sneed Business in the Arts Awards; Joan Gilmore, the Bill Crawford Memorial Media in the Arts Award.
Also Dr. Jack Herron, Fred Neuman, William”Bill” Scoggan, Ann Tomlins, the Arts and Education Award; Kathy Buxton, The Garber Theater Board, Dr. Frank Letcher, Jose Martinez, Christy McCollough Northcutt, Jerry Speck, the Community Service Awards; Maxine Thomason, George Nigh Mayor’s Award; Bill Grant, Special Recognition Award, and Wanda Otey Westheimer, the Marilyn Douglass Memorial Award.

The very dazzling Beaux Arts Ball evening at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club on November 24 featured beautiful debutantes, handsome escorts, an exceptional and energetic King and outstanding decorations.
It was a night to remember for the 300 plus guests. From the entry procession of the former Kings to Jim Vallion’s transformation of the Country Club into a veritable French garden using decorations of red and yellow and multi-colored roses and topiaries, the event was spectacular.
Dr. John Russell Bozalis was named the 2007 King of the Ball.
Chairman Elain Frogge and Co-Chairman Libby Denner, who have planned the details for this 62nd annual Ball for a year, were everywhere during the evening seeing that the debutante presentation ran smoothly.
On the Ball committee were Connell Branan, Mindy Cunningham, Kathryn Crabb. Shirley Everest, Tricia Everest, Mary FitzSimons, Karen Hanstein, Anne Henderson, Ciane Hogan, Linda James, Laura Kirkpatrick, Tricia Law, Bebe MacKellar, Susan McPherson, Lisa Pierce, Dana Price, Barbara Quillian, Leslie Russell, Karen Samis and Lauren Sullivan.

SPARKLING SCENE…The Oklahoma Centennial Spectacular Show celebrated 100 years of history.
The 100th birthday event featured everything…wonderful entertainment…beautiful singing….excellent music….gorgeous stars….major confetti….giant balloons bouncing around….dancers… early day photography and a birthday cake.
Following the star –studded event at the Ford Center was one of the after-parties at the Petroleum Club. Partying on two floors, VIP guests were entertained by the members of the Oklahoma Centennial Commission and Oklahoma Events. White orchids were everywhere. They were stacked in large vases for the tables and the orchids were hanging, jungle style, from lights. Centennial etched glasses were used for drinks and star-shaped ice sculptures were on the tables.

A silver, monogrammed ice bucket was filled with flowers for the buffet table and it was given to the honorees from the hosts.
TOP HONORS…The University of Oklahoma Honor’s College board and faculty members attended a cocktail party in the home of Ann and Judge Richard Bohanon. Co-hosts were Barbara and Judge Ralph Thompson and Jean Warren. Warren, Ralph Thompson and Richard Bohanon are board members.
ROW YOUR BOAT…. Sponsors and donors of the fourth annual Devon Energy Centennial river parade were asked to drop by the VIP Tent along the riverbank where they had front row seats for the event. Hot chocolate, coffee, wine and chocolate chip cookies were served by hosts, the River Parade organization.
Guests also enjoyed the fireworks show sponsored by the Oklahoma Centennial Commission.
TAKE A BOW….M.J. VanDeventer was honored at a dinner at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. She has retired after being there for 17 years as Persimmon Hill magazine editor.

A REUNION…Tom Knott was host for a reunion of people who recently traveled together for 10 days in Russia and Poland.
LISA’S CELEBRATION…Patti Elder and Emily Pilcher were hostesses for a 50th birthday luncheon honoring Lisa Elder. It was at Gabriella’s Restaurant.
A yummy Italian cream cake with white chocolate medallion panels was topped with white chocolate 50’s and truffles. Guests included Liz Robins, Marcia Meiring, Marcia Morgan, Penny McCaleb, Linda Klos, Diana Smith, Marcia Davis, Norma McRae, Dina Deupree, Barbara Philbin, Sarah Brawley, John Covington, Patti and John Elider, Liz Polk, Martha Marshall, Kelly Fry, Lisa Prince, Courtney Briggs Melton, Marianne Rooney, Jeanne Polk, Beth Portman, Sody Clements and Adelaide Liedtke.
ENGAGING…Newly engaged couple Kaylan Hudiburg and Dustin Freeman, were honored a party in the home of Karen and Steve Hudiburg. Toni Freeman was also a host for the engagement party.
Fall pumpkins with the couple’s initials lined the entrance and were set throughout the house. Mark Folger provided entertainment.
Among the guests were Erin Smith, Karen and Derrick Novakowski, Trey Olson, Maggie Johnson, Jane Huston, Hallie Henley and Candace and Ben Randolph.
SWEET 13…Judy Hassoun was honored at a 13th birthday dance at Gaillardia Golf and Country Club. Parents Suzanne and Basel Hassoun were hosts.
Purple and white balloons decorated the room and balloon bouquets were on the tables. The honoree also wore a purple dress. There was a two -tiered birthday cake and an instructor taught line dancing. A disc jockey played music for the guests, mostly 7th graders at Casady School where Judy is a student.
TABLES SET…Forty hostesses set 40 special tables in Wewoka, Oklahoma, for the “Some Enchanted Evening” dinner at the Wewoka Trading Post. Each one had a special theme and the themes ranged from Centennial tables to Oklahoma- themed tables.
Waiters in black tie attire served the guests at the dinner and pianist Danny Miller played dinner music. Marilyn Moody decorated the room which featured lots of white lights.
Planning the event were Phyllis Williamson, Wanda Adkins and Richard Ellwanger.

Following the star –studded event at the Ford Center on November 16, 2007, was one of the after-parties at the Petroleum Club. Partying on two floors, VIP guests were entertained by the members of the Oklahoma Centennial Commission and Oklahoma Events.
T-Byrd Gordon played while guests mixed and mingled and watched the Centennial fireworks celebration from the 34th floor of the building.

A sold-out luncheon crowd admired and purchased gorgeous jewelry November 14th at the beautiful Ballroom of the Skirvin Hilton Hotel.
It was the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center’s Cardiac Arrhythmia Reseach Institute’s annual luncheon and Temple St. Claire’s gemstones and gold jewelry was featured, courtesy of Naifeh Fine Jewelry.
Shopping began at 10:30 a.m. and luncheon was at 1 p.m. Allen Barber gave the patient testimonial and Melissa Rivkin of Temple St. Claire showed a video. Table decorations included blooming orchids, draped in pearls, surrounded by more jewelry, pretty gold bracelets.
Jenny Kallenberger and Elaine Levy were event co-chairmen. Elizabeth Coe was the honorary chairman.

Jane Jayroe Gamble, Clara Luper and Linda K. Twine were honorees at a Oklahoma City University breakfast November 9 in the Brenda and Tom MCDaniel University Center. They were among the inductees in the Oklahoma Hall of Fame and all have OCU ties.
Gamble and Twine are OCU graduates and Luper is an OCU trustee and founder of the Clara Luper scholarship program.

ONE AND ONLY….Elaine Levy invited a special group of people to her home. 80 women came to the party and one of things that the women had in common was that they had grown up as only children.
The invitation stated “Rare individuals like yourself are invited to come together at our “One and Only” annual celebration of “Onlyness.”
Co-hostesses were Carol Blackwood, Peggy Collins, Suzanne Cunningham, Marge Duncan, Sally Harry, Ann Felton, Connie Mitchener, Sue Nix, Marsha See, Millie Woodruff and Phyllis Stough.
All of the hostesses wore a strand of large-sized pearls and flashing faux diamond rings. Guests enjoyed wine and lime drinks, small sandwiches and cakes (decorated with #1) and truffles.
Guests included Sue Timberlake, Sally Bentley, Beth Wells, Penny McCaleb, Betty Crow, Mary Mahaffey, Kay Oliver, Barbara Watson, Judy Jordan, Sylvia Shirley and Lois Holmboe.
Ann Alspaugh, Ann Hoover, Barbara Lauterback and Jeaneen Naifeh met for a luncheon at The Coach House for visitors Lauterback and Mary Anna Scanlon.
LET’S HAVE LUNCH…Ann Felton, Ann Hoover and Jeaneen Naifeh were hostesses at a luncheon at The Coach House honoring Barbara Lauterback, Centre Harbour, N.H., and Mary Anna Scanlon, Harrison, N.Y. They were visiting Ann Alspaugh.
They celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday a little early and served turkey and gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and they decorated the tables with fall flowers, pomegranates, persimmon branches and fall leaves.
Guests included Brenda McDaniel, Ann Alspaugh, Vicki Gourley, Barbara Cooper, Carol Troy, Holly Healey, Cathy Leichter, Lela Sullivan, Jane Jayroe Gamble, Annie Bohanon, Kaye Cook, Melinda Cox and Barbara Harjo. Bob Naifeh invited friends for lunch too and at the men’s table was Bill Jackson, Gerald Gamble, Bob Gilliland, Bob Hoover and Jackie Cooper.

SHOWERING BRIE…Brie Elkouri Dorr, Cambridge, Mass., was honoree at a baby shower and party at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. Hostesses were Jane White, Carol Solomon, Kathy Griffin, Cindy Rice, Shari Buxton, Ashley Parrish, Mary Jane Southwick and Linda James.
The hostesses gave the honoree and husband Chris a silver baby rattle from Tiffany’s. Gerber daisies in antique silver vases decorated the Hunt Room and food items included sugar cookies in the shapes of teddy bears, rocking horses, baby buggies and baby rattles. A large wheel of Brie cheese was served as well as “Shirley Temples,” the honoree’s favorite drink as a child. Wine was also served.
Small bar tables were set in the room and they held vases of daisies and were topped with antique linen tablecloths. Special guests of the honoree were her mother Terry Bradley and her friend Caiti Barta Sanders, Aspen, Colo.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEASLEYS…Judy and Tom Love and Sylvia and Robert Slater gave a birthday party for Sherry and Lee Beasley in the Love home. Their 60th birthdays are within a month of each other.
Table decorations were cakes in different flavors. When the guests blew out the candles at each table, they made good wishes for the Beasleys. Other guests included Beverly and Mark Funke, Jane and David Thompson, Susan and Jay Johnston, Cindy and Hugh Rice, Alice and Don Dahlgren and Lana and Dave Lopez.

DEDICATION DINNER…Several Oklahoma City University buildings were dedicated on a special “Day of Celebration” October 30th and a dinner in the new Brenda and Tom McDaniel University Center Great Hall concluded the activities.
At the dinner for 250 people, President Tom McDaniel spoke, as well as Board Chairman Bill Shdeed. Vice President of University Advancement Art Cotton also talked as the group kicked off a fund- raising campaign.
Rick McKee played the piano during dinner and the OCU Choir sang.
On the “Day of Celebration,” an Oklahoma Centennial Clock was dedicated; the school’s newest dormitory, Centennial Residence Hall, was dedicated and ceremonies for the Norick Family Student/Faculty Lounge, the Martha Burger Career Services Center and the Sylvia and Jack Golsen Conference Center were held. The renovated Brenda and Tom McDaniel University Center and Shdeed Trustee Lounge were also dedicated.

SPECIAL EVENING….Members of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation board of directors honored ten former Board Chairman and their families at a cocktail reception at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club.
Current board chairmen Len Cason, and David R. Brown, 1997-2001, were honored as well as these board chairmen posthumously: Ancel Earp, J.G. Puterbaugh, Ted Warkentin, John Rogers, B.D. Eddie, Ben C. Wileman, Dean A. McGee and Edward L. Gaylord.

Manfred Westerwelle was the honoree at a special retirement party at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. He has been the General Manager there for 23 years.
300 members came to the party including Manfred’s wife, Saundra. Ken Burkemper created an ice carving in his honor which said “Good By” and “Thanks” in German. Westerwelle is of German descent. Jim Vallion created the fall centerpieces for all the tables. Champagne was served as well as lemon drop martinis and cosmopolitans.

MEET CHARLIE…Brooksley Bentley, Candace Nelson with Charlie Nelson, 3 months, and Libby Nelson with Charlotte Nelson, 6 months, visit at the party honoring Los Angeles, Calif., resident Charlie Nelson, 3 months. He was in town with parents, Candace and Charles Nelson.
Grandmother Lynda Nelson had a sip and see party in his honor. Co-hostesses were Aunt Libby Nelson and Cousin Charlotte Nelson. A car theme was used. Invitations stated “beep, beep! Charlie’s In Town” and had little cars all over.

HONORING BARBARA... Lela Sullivan, Barbara Cooper and Kay Goebel were at the cocktail party where Barbara Cooper was honored for 15 years of loyalty and leadership for the Oklahoma AIDS Care Fund. The party was in the home of Lela and Mark Sullivan.
Guests were members of the ACF executive committee and former chairmen of the Red Tie Ball. Also attending were Whitney and David Hooten, Jimi and Ken Davidson, Carol and Mac Troy, Joan Gilmore, Sarah Garcia, Sue Ann Hyde, Jim Vallion, Toni Wizenberg, Daryl Fisher, Mary Dean Streich, Darlene Shadid and Sheryl Colton.
ANNUAL FOOD AND DRINK…Samonia Meredith, Mary Ellen Meredith, Jeff and Lisa McConnell and Leslie Blair celebrate the Halloween season with a costume party. They sent e-vites (e-mail invitations.) Samonia’s home was decorated with spider webs, pumpkins, bats, lights and a full graveyard in the front. Troy Scott created balloon animals and did some magic tricks.

IT’S A PARTY.…Linda James, Laura Kirkpatrick, Barbara Beeler and Linda Reece enjoy the party. Beeler and Reece were two of the hostesses, along with Libby Steakley and Patty Cohenour, for a baby shower and brunch at Cohenour’s home for Kirkpatrick. Laura and Austin Kirkpatrick’s baby boy is due soon. For the serving table, a blue and white vase held tulips, roses, iris, sunflowers, daisies and bells of Ireland. Ham, cheese and egg soufflé was served, along with grits, and mini muffins. Monogrammed petit fours were also on the menu. Among the guests were Candy Ainsworth, Karen Samis, Susan Hoffman, Shirley Everest, Lawre Everest, Susan Parker, Jackie Jones, Marsha See, Linda James, Shan Samis and Arlene James. FAN FARE… Lara Branum, Phoebe Hunter, Grace Douglas, Natalie Marshall, Audrey Amis, Ellie Dunn, Savannah Vogler, seated, and John Marshall, standing, celebrate Natalie Marshall’s 9th birthday Japanese style at Musashi’s Japanese Steakhouse. Partygoers wore silk kimonos, geisha wigs and makeup. They had dinner in a private dining room and a chef prepared their dinner.
